Football Card Collectors - What are you buying lately? Market Trends?

I've been buying up 1970's football rookies and stars in PSA 8 and higher. Just picked up a 1976 Walter Payton RC PSA 8 and a 1979 Earl Campbell RC PSA 8. I got both 30-40% under SMR. I still think football (especially defensive players) is way undervalued compared to baseball. I know that the there is a longer hobby history in baseball cards, but I see much fewer high grade vintage football stuff out there.

As for hot cards out there - I notice that 1970's Steeler cards go for much higher than book, especially the Franco Harris rookie. Also you almost never see any good Bradshaw's come up.

The 1980's stuff, except for the 1984 Elway RC and 1984 USFL Steve Young, seem slow right now. I am very surprised at the low interest in 1981 Joe Montana RC.

I stay away from the modern RCs except for Detroit Lions and former Notre Dame stars. You guys should buy Kevin Jones. He is going to have a huge year if Garcia becomes the starter.

  • I usually steer clear of trends. If I notice I am not winning auctinos on certain years of cards or players, I do the waiting game, until prices get to what I am willing to pay. In general, I am a set builder and work on all Football sets from 1948 to about 1995, so there is always something that is not as hot as other stuff for me to buy. Right now, however, I am looking for the 1963 Topps football color variatins mentioned in my sig below, and the Diamond Match football players from the 1930's. I have dozens of bookmarked searches I go through from time to time, to see when the time is right to buy.
