A fake mantle in a real PSA case for sale....

I posted this to the pujols thread but maybe it should be in its own thread (or own can of worms)

FakeMantle in RealPSA

And it is up to $50 already - real authentication number too. Wonder what happened to the real one - maybe i will ask the seller how he did it.

He has a fake PSA Jordan rookie and another fake PSA 1952 Mantle too!

Completed my Clemente Basic Registry (2007 - 2014)!

I just asked him and will see if he responds.
  • this was tried with a t206 wagner ---maybe same seller---and he was shut down by ebay---what a blowhole,he knows he'll have the scammers lining up for this one! this is illegal and he will be notified soon.

    Here is his/her reply.

<< <i>Hi- I believe it was another PSA 5 1952 Topps card in the slab originally, and the name, card #, and PSA # were altered to make it a "Mantle". Thanks for your interest. >>

  • the serial number on that card is a 1952 Richie Ashburn PSA 7, either the Ashburn has been broken from the slab, or it's a fake label.
I thought it was, and then it was.

    << <i>FOOL YOUR FRIENDS INTO THINKING YOU HAVE A $10,000 CARD >>

I would consider the fact that anyone bidding on this item may not have "foolery" but rather "larceny" on their mind?

  • I see 04337638 - which does appear to be a Mantle....what number do you see?

Don't worry about this card being sold on eBay at least. PSA is working to have it taken down.

I asked about the case if it was broken or what and here is his reply...

The case seals have been cracked open, but they still snap shut and stay shut. Thanks!
  • Mac,
I will bet you anything that someone would pay at least 10.00 on ebay for that Mickey Mantle reprint you have.
The Link below will take you to the PSA Boards 1952 Set Build, I also have made 5 slideshows each slideshow is 100 cards long, card numbers 1-99,100-199,200-299,300-399, and 400-407

I've decided not to sell it. I'm going to put together a complete set of fake '52 Topps cards in fake PSA 9 holders.

I got another response from the seller:

Some of the older PSA cases had weaker sealant, and
when I lived up in Colorado Springs, it seems the
altitude made it a lot easier to separate them. One
time we were skiing up at Breckenridge (about 8500')
and started messing around with some PSA cards. A
friend pulled a case apart with his bare hands, and
thats when we got the idea to "make" our dream card, a
    '52 Mantle, "PSA graded".

    Anyone know anything about this?

Well, I lived in Colorado Springs for 20 years, and I don't have much to say about it. Except, think about it:
    "Let's go skiing!!"
    "Wow, great!! Sounds like fun!!"
"OK, I'll pack up everything--skis, parkas, blankets, food, and some Scotch!!"
"Yeah, great!! Hey, wait!! Don't forget all of your PSA cards!!!"
"Wow, man, I almost forgot!! Ha ha ha ha!!"
    "Yeah. Ha, ha, ha, ha!!!"

Well the guy's pretty open about the whole thing.
He's telling you anything you want to know. The slab
has been cracked open, and another card re-inserted.
He's not hiding anything. He's a little shark, but the bigger
fish are coming in because they see bigger $ when they
dish it off as the real deal.

Just took another look. Auction shut down. He'll be back.

A random rumination: the great equalizer in internet selling has been the grading process, particularly PSA. If it comes to common knowledge that a PSA slab is unreliable, I cannot see how this will not have a large impact on card prices on the internet. PSA should take the lead in tracking down this particular type of fraud, IMO. If the PSA slab loses its reliability, who's going to spend the money to get any card graded? What am I missing?

  • It looks like he is back again - but trying a 1 day private bidder auction this time around...

Is it just the lighting or does the case look pretty busted? I think that is why he is using the light background for both auction pics. I remember a post about a seller poping cases and switchoing cards on PSA 10s and buyers nerver really caught on to it. Do people not look at the cases carefully?

I have been living in Colorado Springs for over 16 years and since the time I've gotten these plastic slabs, I have not noticed any separation. If anything about here that would perhaps cause a difference, it would be the very low humidity, not the altitude.
