Need help identifying a coin

I came across this coin from a group of older forgein coins I purchased in an antique shop. Of the group this is the only one I have haven't been able to identify. I have a copy of the 1996 Standard Catalog of World Coins and can't seem to find it in there. Does any one have an idea what it might be.

It is about the size of a half dime and silver in color.

Thanks!

Looks like a homemade coin to me. The number looks like it was punched with a shop # punch set. -Dan
  • It's not a 'real' coin in my opinion. It maybe looks more like a version of play money, a store token or form of notgeld.

I agree with Dan. It's pretty crude and doesn't look like anything I've ever seen before.

I'll go with the "play money" theory, as that was my first impression, too.

Especially if it is aluminum. I have dug some neat pieces of old fashioned play money while out detecting, sometimes. Some pieces have even been dated- in the 1950's.

One time I was detecting at an old inn that was built around 1800. In the side yard near where the stables probably used to be, I dug a 1950 "Uncle Sam Play Dime", which is smaller than an actual dime. For a moment or two I was sure I had dug my first silver three cent piece- it really got the adrenaline pumping!

It's pretty interesting, whatever it is you have there.

  • Thanks guys!

I will continue to look around the"net" and see if I can find anything else like it.
