What does Branca do for a living besides racking up high quality treasures?
I've always fantasized what I would do if I hit the lottery. Speaking of lottery,
I better get a ticket. It's 40 million for tonights drawing in CA.

At one point, Branca's law firm represented Michael Jackson...

That's not the reason he has to sell all his cards is it?

Koby - this is the perfect case of 'information asymetry'. I don't know why he is selling his cards - and likely no one out there does. He has no reason to tell - especially since a number of the potential reasons could possibly impact valuation of the cards he has.

If you're selling cards because you're strapped for cash - do you want your buyer to know that you are desparate for liquidity? No.

If you're selling cards because you are disenfranchised with grading in general - do you want your buyers to know that you are fed up with the system? No.

If you're selling cards because you think they are fully valued - do you want your buyers to know that you are predicting prices to fall? No.

Thus - saying nothing, or something generic and cheery is about all you can hope for....

I believe I read he wants to focus his collection on the PSA Top 200 card list. That 1989 UD Griffey sure is going to seem out of place in his collection!

Even megacollectors can get hobby burnout. Would it really be shocking if someone who didn't really collect for much of his life, but got into the market in a huge way, decided he was sick of competing for the best known examples of Memo Luna and Clyde Klutts cards, and wanted to focus on players who actually had meaning for him?

  • The article didn't say why he is selling but here are a few of the other highlights:

    1) John Branca is the nephew and godson of Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca (yes, the pitcher that gave up the "shot heard around the world" to Bobby Thompson. "The Giants win the Pennant!! The Giants Win the Pennant!!

2)He started collecting as a kid. His collection was "the victim of a home burglary" while he was away at law school.

    3) He got back into collecting when he was bidding on his uncles' GU uniform in the famed Barry Halper auction. He won that and alot more!

    4) As a lawyer, he's represented Michael Jackson, Carlos Santana, The Beach Boys, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones at some point.

    5) The article did quote him as saying, "While I'm excited to be focusing on cards that have intrigued me for some time, it will be very difficult to relinquish parts of my collection." One can only wonder what those intriguing cards may be. image

Edited to add: The bidding begins 3/28/05!

I am dying to see what is in the Branca collection even if I can't afford it.

The banner on the top of this page says that preview in now online, but the Mastro page still has only the previous auction. Can anyone else see the auciton preview?
