Bonds maybe out until June or season - What does this do to his cards?

Just heard on Jim Rome that Bonds maybe out until June or the season depending on how his knee goes. What do you think will happen to his cards? I don't have much into Bonds, just a BGS 9.5 Sportflic RC. I'm glad that I lost out on a Tiffany PSA 9 RC last week!

  • Maybe that's karma kicking in. I hope he never plays another game, and I've got all his rookies.
I thought it was, and then it was.

Not that this is my personal belief, but I can see the theory gaining some popularity:

Much like Michael Jordan's first retirement from basketball in the swirl of gambling allegations, the theory will go that MLB and Barry Bonds agreed that in order to let the steriod crisis die down and to keep some integrity to the game and HR records, Barry agrees to sit out a season or two with an "injury". He will come back eventually and hit 20-30 more homeruns to pass Ruth, but keeping Aaron's record intact before retiring from the game altogther.

Once again, I don't believe it, but I think the theory will make the rounds.
  • bonds will not be remembered fondly in baseball history, his cards will only go down in value as every modern card does anyway.

I don't think Bonds will come back. 41 yrs old, can't take steriods anymore. He will retire.

I expect to see a ton of Bonds show up on ebay starting tomorrow.

Is he still a first ballot HOF'er? I think he will get in, but he may have to wait.

I think this theory is not so farfetched.

As far as the value of Bonds' cards, I think they will go down since everyone was expecting him to blow by Ruth and Aaron. Number three is not bad but its not number one.

Bonds was just another good card that I could flip on ebay and make a profit, for me he has no collectability. He is a jerk and an *ss. He
knew that he was found out and now he is trying to blame that on the media, of course its because he is black. None of this he brought
    upon himself huh?

He knows without the juice he is just another 40 home run guy. I bet it gets to him that old fat whitey Babe Ruth still will have have
more homers and never took roids. Poor Barry, we all should feel sorry for him...funny, they all break down in the end...just be
graceful and bow out like Mac did...oh wait..scratch that

    Ahh, wonderful news...

Sounds to me like his career is over and he's going to do the right thing and leave Ruth and Aaron's records untouched. It really would have been a sad day for baseball if he would have passed Babe Ruth, knowing that the guy cheated to do it.

His cards were all way overproduced, and eventually people will realize that they are a dime a dozen and way over-valued and they will plummet. Even those 86 Tiffany's, there are thousands of them, and the Bonds card is easy to find in high grade.

Do you think that the collecting dollars tied up in Bonds/McGwire/Sosa/Giambi will drive the values of other stars? These guys card values may die, but people will still collect.

I can see A-Rod cards having another huge run as people will start collecting his cards instead of Bonds. Maybe Jeter will also gain.

I had said this earlier before spring training - with all the crap that's being directed at the "overly-muscled" hitters, guys like Griffey could grab the spot light again.
If Jr stays healthy - knocks a bunch over the fence - people may be starved for a hero to direct their affection towards - and Griffey could be the man - if so, watch his 89UD RC climb again. This is just an idea.
We'll have to see if I'm the goat or the winner?

Many would love to see Griffey do his thing again. I hope you are right, but everytime Griffey steps on the field I am holding my breath praying that the hamstring and ankle hold up.

I can't believe those who think Bonds is gone for good. No way ...... I don't care for him at all and would love to see him slip off into the night but no chance in this happening.

Bonds says he may be out until next season

He blamed his troubles on the media.

Though I am not a Bonds fan I expect him back and I expect a serious run at Aaron... might take a couple years but he will get close! His cards are garbage like most modern (anybody else have 1 or 10 '87 Topps rookies sitting around collecting dust!?) but I do believe he will be a first ballot HOFer.

It would actually be interesting to see all the people who bought Bonds RC's as an "investment" in the last few years scramble to dump them - if in fact he retires, which he won't. He's just looking for sympathy, but this is certainly not going to help his already tarnished reputation any.

  • At one time, I had almost everything tied up in Bonds rookies. Nice, graded puppies too.

Somehow, someway, they all found their way onto Ebay. I just sold my last 2, last week. I was even disappointed at what I got for them. I never thought he'd get injured, or retire, but something told me to sell them one by one. Now I have ZERO.

Beckett really pounded his GEM MINT rookies anyway. His BGS 9.5 Fleer was at like $1,400 not long ago. I just saw it drop to like $650 in the latest Beckett. Pretty sad.

I had one of the biggest Barry Sanders collections ( on my block ) that I was saving for like 3 years in anticipation of him passing Payton. I was going to bank when that happened. HE SCREWED ME. I guess subconciously I was worried that might happen here. I guess I may have been right.

7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

The whole issue of RC's and ROI that was the hottest ticket in the early 90's has probably lost all its luster in this climate.

If I ever get the urge to "invest" in RC's, I will first hire a thug to beat the crap outa me and bring me to my senses! That would probably be better money spent.

Well, I'm stuck with some Bonds cards, but at least I got rid of most of 'em. The rest will be tucked away in hopes of a better market someday.

C'mon, Junior, stay healthy for a whole season! You had me dreaming for awhile last year.

I have the 87 Fleer in PSA 9, but graded it myself from my endless stacks of 80's stuff from when I collected in high school. So, no money here tied up in the ummmm man? is it?

It seems the Giants still feel it will be six weeks, even after Barry's rant today. To be sure, if Barry's current mood lasts for more than six weeks, that has the same effect. But maybe the actual rehab picture hasn't changed -- just his attitude.
  • I don't know if I'd worry too much about the Barry Sanders collection. He is still going to the HOF though he won't have the record. He's still pretty collectable and I can't see interest in him flagging too much. I'd like to have some nice graded rookies of his in my collection.

  • << <i> i'd like to see griffey step it up as well. however, he'll probably be the next major roids case to appear. >>

There is no way. Griffey doesn't power his HRs out, he lets that perfect swing do all the work. Although I may not be the one to defend him, because it was and is still my personal fav even if you have to wrap the guy in bubble wrap everytime he takes the field! I still love to watch the guy swing.
  • Yes, but the thing that must be remembered is that Griffey is not apt to play the role of media darling. In my opinion, he is not held in very high esteem by a number of sports writers. With Bonds controlling the lions share of the media's ire, many with short memories tend to forget the run ins Griffey Junior has had in the past.

    Holla!

If Bonds sits out for an entire season with no steroids, he will come back looking like that Olsen twin with the eating disorder. Cracks me up that he blames this on the media....so is it and injury Barry or is this something to wait for everything to cool down? That's right...let Giambi and McGwire take the shots for you....now go home without the HR record and stay there! image
All my Bonds are long gone...RIP Bonds!
Even if he does wait until next season, does he really believe the media will forget the whole steroid thing? ESPECIALLY if he breaks the all time HR record? Then, if he is unable to hit the HRs, he can blame it on age, slowing down, and missing the previous season...so then it will be time to retire in 2nd place.
