I recently won an auction from Australia. Seller wants a personal check in the amount of AU$15.00. How do I make the check out? Sounds stupid but I've never done it before. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Have you contacted the seller? You might want to check and see if there is some other way that he would accept the money.

My understanding is that if you send him an American check to cover that amount, he will lose money on the sale because of the bank fees. I had a win from a guy in the UK last year - he requested a check for $20 American and his bank would NOT cash the check because it was going to cost them more to redeem the check than it was worth!!!

The simplest solution would be to get an international Postal Money Order denominated in AU dollars.

I sold to a guy in Australia once. He paid through Paypal in Australian dollars and it got converted to US dollars (there is a way to send enought Australian dollars to cover the US $ price (and vice-versa, I suppose).

Do as Russ suggested,check with the USPS and see if thats possible,i know you can buy them in CANADIAN dollars.

Convert it to US dollars and send cash,but no coins as they likely cant use them.

15.00 aussie is about 12-13 usd.

If you have a bank account at a larger bank, you probably can get a bank draft in Australian dollars. My bank (HSBC) doesn't charge me a fee for this.

Yeah, Australia is not on the list. I e-mailed the seller and asked her the best way to do this. I don't want her to have to pay $20 or more in processing fees for a $5 coin. She probably thinks I'm a pain in the a$$ for such a small purchase, but better safe than sorry. Thanks for all the suggestions folks. If I do send a check do I write it out $15.00 AU and then spell out " Fifteen Dollars Australian"? Another lesson learned: Check this stuff out before bidding. Thanks again.--Kurt

For a $15 coin, just cash might be the way to go. You can either send US currency in the appropriately converted amount (adding a bit for the commission the seller will have to pay), or go to your local Thomas Cooke or other moneychanger and buy AUD to send them.

Naturally, be sure to conceal it well.

i dont think the check will work that way.

Like flaminio said,buy some AU currency if you live near an INTL airport,if not just send USD,most banks will change it over.

On a side note,was in New Zealand in 1991,walked in a Royal Aussie bank or something to cash some trav checks and saw some USD 1000 dollar notes in the tellers tray ! what are those worth now ? 2000-2500 ?
