HOF Football Autograph experts take a look...

Hey,

Looking for opinions on this one:

Jim Thorpe Autograph World Fair Ticket

I thought for a few minutes about bidding on this one, but after comparing to all of the PSA/DNA samples and thinking about others that I had seen in the past...it just didn't look right. So did someone get an unbelievable steal....or was this auction avoided by experienced collectors because they are sure it's not legit? I decided to fight my urge to get that "once in a lifetime" steal and not bid because I had to follow my instincts. Let me know what you think.

it may be a sig of jim thorpe from woburn mass....but it's not a sig of jim thorpe from carlisle pa. i'm not an expert, but thorpe sigs are very rare. i jumped into the mix last fall when mastro had an 8x10...but it went for nearly 3g's. that auto resembles thorpe's...but on top of the bleeding it also looks like a forced signature. i personally would pass on it, especially since it's $75 for a thorpe authentication.

if you want a thorpe signature, i'd wait for a cut card to pop up on ebay, or a major auction house...and either way a truly legit one will run you at least $1000 for a cut.

  • Duner,

Thanks for the input....I agree with your points. I looked over several examples and noticed that the "T" was distinctively different in the exemplars and also that the "o" always swooped straight across the top of the letter leading into the "r". The autograph on this ticket has an "o" that actually swoops down across the middle of the letter....that is the one thing that really, really bothered me about it. I know people change their signatures during their lifetime, but PSA/DNA had examples across 20+ years and none of them looked like that one. Thanks again.

  • Hey,

Anyone else want to weigh in on this one? Hoping there are some other members who took a good look at this auction when it was running.
