  • He does say that he is selling it as a reprint.

How can I (the buyer) know that is counterfeit by looking at it if it does not say reprint on it? Is it a different size? Paper quality? Just wondering.
  • The guy also has a Mickey Mantle fake on EBay. But it is for $3.50. Would that be a good price for a reprint of such a famous card I'll never be able to afford? I wouldn't mind buying it. (He has a couple of others on EBay). The question I'm getting at, because I am a relative newbie to the hobby (Only two years and all I collect are Heritage), I don't fully comprehend the outrage. Is it that you are pissed that it isn't an original? A fraud? But if I could get a Mantle reprint for $3.50, that's cheaper than some contemporary Heritage SPs.

    Only asking.

Paper quality. It should be lighter. I have a 54 mays reprint. Light as a feather.

Take a look at the auction description of the banks card he bought and the auction description of his own. The other auction states in bold that the card is a reprint...no questions asked, no ambiguity. His auction description leaves room for doubt. He does not categorically state (although he knows its the truth) that the card is a reprint. He states that hes forced under some sort of ebay rule (which does not exist, but is only used to keep him safe when the buyer realizes that the $100 card is a $3 reprint) that the card is being sold as a reprint. But, he puts some doubt in the buyer's mind by stating that the card may be real since it does not state it's a reprint on the card. About 90% of collectors know this guy is a scammer...its the 10% all of us are worried about.
  • The guy has 25 Mantles. He'll sell 'em for $3.

I'll buy one and report to its thickness, etc.

The Topps Archive set sucks because they are on flimsy shiny cardboard isn't of the thick paper that the originals had.

Save $3 and print a Mantle from a scan with your desk top printer and card stock from WalMart because that is what you are buying.
  • MajorDanby you are 100% correct 90% collectors do know that these are fake cards, you state it's the 10% we worry about---lots of times its easy to think--HOW STUPID ARE THESE BIDDERS--what we have to remember is it might be a girlfriend/little sister or brother/mom etc sometimes trying to buy a surprise for the card collector in their life---and when they buy from these ebay scum it sure is a SURPRISE to the collector! imagine getting a fake card for a present that someone bought for you from one of these "sellers"---or worse yet a graded paper cutout!!!! image

--what we have to remember is it might be a girlfriend/little sister or brother/mom etc sometimes trying to buy a surprise for the card collector in their life---

Where can I get one of these girlfriends who suprises me with Ernie Banks rookies lol
  • Just wondering and NOT trying to make a case.

But for $3, and that includes postage, how much would it cost for paper, ink, ect.

I'm buying this for investigative purposes. Maybe it will be a 60 Minutes report.

Well, he DID buy it in an auction. He just neglects to say it was an eBay auction. But where he really gets down in the sewer is where he claims three different card shops couldn't tell if it was real. He already KNOWS it's not real. He bought it as a reprint!

starsforless has been mentioned before as the eBay scammers' favorite supplier of reprints that don't say "reprint." Might as well call themselves CARD SCAM SUPPLY WAREHOUSE: MANTLES & MORE. I wonder if they print 'em themselves or have their own supplier.

Pharber, I recommend you buy a nice authorized Mantle reprint, that clearly says "reprint" on the back. I'm afraid if you get one of these shady ones, eventually you'll yield to temptation and pretend you found it in an old trunk in Great-Aunt Edna's attic and say you're not sure if it's authentic.

I've got reprints of the Goudey Lajoie, T206 Wagner, that really tough T207, T206 Plank, etc. Some of them even have perforated edges. Sometimes I wonder what they'd get bid up to if I auctioned them, and then see what the buyers do with them. Caveat emptor is the least of philosphies on ebay.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

  • Well said by jrdolan & MajorDanby.

Let's look at the Koufax I considered bidding - the original seller (in this case erniefigures) clearly says Reprint in the title and reprint several times in the description :

    KoufaxReprint

The person who bought the clearly lister reprint flips the card, and as a seller does the following :

Lists it as Great Card in title, in description says "Great looking", "Must have", and the usual scammer garbage of "Card has not been graded by a third party, so selling as a reprint." Which leaves a fair amount of doubt...

    Shady

We'll see what ebay says about this 'suspicious activity'
    Collecting all things Pittsburgh.

Those reprints that erniefigures sells are pretty bad. I bought one a long time ago to see what quality they were to better educate myself since he offers some cards that you would not usually expect to be reprinted, ie. a 56 Koufax. They are nice in those holders though you can easily spot the printing dots if you know what you are doing. The cases are a nice touch if you are just using them for display and nothing shady. If you hold them up to the light you can see through the card. If you crack the case, which I did, you can see that the card is printed on thin card stock. You can bend the card and make the edges touch without creasing it. If it is not in a tamper proof case, I would think even the most sheepish of buyers would figure it out.
  • This guy is a real dirt bag and makes no efforts to hide it. The Seaver, Mantle, and Koufax reprints he has up for sale were bought just LAST WEEK. Cmon dude, can't you even wait 3 months until your old purchases are no longer archived? I like the way he busted out the Mantle and tried to make it look old by dog-earing the top left corner and roughing up the edges. But the border is still nice and white. Sheesh.
