1963 Unopened Proof Set

Just so I know how I did, what is a good price to pay for an Unopened 1963 proof Set? I have all the confidence in the world that it is original.

Same as any 1963 proof set.

Most so called, "unopened", proof sets on eBay have been opened. If you search eBay you will find sellers of replacement envelopes.

They usually recieve a small premium if they say unopened in the title.I've seen them go from $14 to the low $30s.

I picked up 15 at a show yesterday unopened ( yea right) for $9.00 each

Well I figured it might be worth a shot for $13......Perhaps nothing special, but the seller is very reputable. I got it on Ebay from Tim@ VTCOINS.

I would not a pay a premium for an opened Proof set from that era. The chances of getting something great, like ONE two sided ultra cameo coin, are really low. Chances are you will get 5 ordinary Proof coins.

Interestingly enough the old flat pack packaging has done a pretty good job of preserving these sets through the years. Some times you will run into a set that had a pinhole that damaged one of the coins, but more often than not the "bad sets" are the result of an owner storing the coins in his cellar or attic at one time or an other.

I'm sure that the odds of there being something amazing in there are fairly low, but since the premium isn't all that high I figured what the heck. Like I said, from this seller I have confidence that I will be the first to see it, assuming I open it right away.

In general, paying more than a buck or two over greysheet is too much IMO.

Also, you should try to get them from as many sources as possible. If you hit a "score" from a certain source, buy more, as chances are you will get additional "scores". If a source is a "dry hole", move on to other sources.

Finally, make sure you do not have "re-sealed" sets -- you can be assured it is picked over crap. Also watch out for sets sealed in new envelopes (not mint originals, Vernon Coin on Ebay sells these things) -- those likely have picked over crap as well.

Kind of strange the 63 is $3 higher than the others. I always thought they were just as common as the 61, 62, and 64.

i paid 13.50....so at least it was reasonable
