  • well I found a few more spears tonite, and a fellow forum member has also found some - anyone else find anything good? High quality? Anyone have any P mint rolls to trade? I won't be trading my spear rolls, but I do have some others to trade.

  • Updated: I found 30 more of these and fellow forum member and his friends found some also. (he lives in my neck of woods).

I got another opinion on the coin from another expert in this field, and as suspected - it"varies" - new theories include possibility of die gouge, die clash, die dent - these are from experts who have viewed coin. Either/or - it is a 'die variant'. I will update this later.

  • I got another 'die gouge' diagnosis'. It was called a 'light die gouge'. Also, there should be something about this in upcoming numismatic publication(s) soon.

current 'spear' count in 'this' area is 68 +87 = 155. Also another guy has probably about 20-30 in his rolls, but he hasn't opened them.

    55 'watchers'!? Wow!

    (from above edit)
Also, FYI - there are NO fees being charged to keep within eBay policy. image
Sorry for my inadvertent error regarding this - I forgot about that!

Has PCGS or NGC taken a stance on this issue? Do you think that they will recognize this error when it is determined exactly what it is? How much are other coins typically worth that have "die gouges"???

<< <i>Also, FYI, the 3% is only if you pay via Paypal to cover those fees. Check or Money order is just fine, and no 3% tacked on. >>

Just wanted to make you aware that this is against ebay/paypal policy (So you don't get in trouble for it later). You can't display the paypal credit card logos and then charge someone a handling fee above what another form of payment would be if they are used.
  • Thanks dthigpen for the heads up on eBay policy - I have changed the auction to reflect NO FEES. Neptune sure doesn't need any trouble! image (I think I knew about this, but forgot it.) It has been rather hectic.

In answer to your question regarding have any of the grading companies taken a stance in recognizing this error - the answer is yes - two so far, and yes, it will be stated on the holder. I have one more phone call to make sure that I did not misunderstand - but I am 99% sure that 3 out of 3 will be designating this as an error. In fact, I just got off the phone with NGC, and was told that it would be designated as a 'reverse die gouge'. That include PCGS, NGC and ANACs.
    Thanks - Pam

Edit: Just got grades from ANACs for first5- batch sent in - all are 65, and one 64. Nothing to write home about, but considering the trashed obverse on most of these coins - it was better than I expected. image

When you mentioned someone called it a die scratch, I just could not believe it. Much too large and thick to be a scratch. An obvious die gouge in my opinion.

FYI, 687 people have clicked on that auction.
  • you were right allllllllll along Richard. It was only the first person (with bad attitude at that) who viewed the coin that said scratch - everyone else so far has said either die gouge - light die gouge - or reverse die gouge - so I guess the general concensus is die gouge of some sort. A lot of hits - and watchers too.
  • here's my allowed ttt for the day. 3 days left.

  • ttt - nice write up in Coin World - April 11 edition and nice photo too - Thanks Eric! Came out in today's online edition.

  • Since Anacs has noted "Speared Bison" On the one's that were graded, will that be enough to declare it as an official variety by the powers that be?? Thanks. image And Congrats on the discovery.

  • me thinks - and prays so - that and the one coming out in Numismatic News, along with the opinions of the various experts that all seem to agree on things.
  • New listing now on eBay. See LINK in first post.

  • Yes - numbers all the way around - like it or not. I was told by PCGS that Bill Fivaz/JT Stanton also have given it a number.
