Willie Mays reprint or original

Hey all, I am thinking about bidding on this card but need some expert opinions/advice. Here is the email I sent the seller and his reply as well "You asked:
"is this an original 1954 topps issued card or a reprint?"

ORIGINAL........SEARCH ONLINE, AND YOU CAN GET A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT THEY SELL FOR AND WHAT THEY ARE WORTH.......YOU CAN ALSO DO A SEARCH ON E-BAY... HOPE THAT HELPS......... ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL , ALMOST GEM MINT......"

What do you guys think. Is it real or fake? Thanks Matt

If at one point the card in this holder was real just look at the rivets that hold the case together and ask how much they cost and how hard would it be to change the card??
    Don't gamble on it

This isn't a 1954 Topps card. It's an insert included in a 1954 issue of Sports Illustrated. It's paper thin, cut from a sheet, and not very valuable at all.

So that explains the SI before the Topps name. I just noticed that. So if it is an original SI insert what do you think the value might be?

Their main value is to shady sellers who hope somebody overlooks the "SI" (if that's mentioned at all) and pays based on the real card.

The first two issues of Sports Illustrated in 1954 (actually the first two issues ever) both had COPIES of TOPPS 1954 Baseball cards in them printed in what may have been a pullout. (regular magazine paper thickness)

As you can see even the complete magazine from 1954 isn't worth a heck of alot

Recent 1954 Sports Illustrated auctions on EBAY

I would rather spend the money on the entire magazine!!

I'm not sure about this, but I think Sports Illustrated may have found a large quantity of the first issue that they offered not that long ago. There are a LOT of high quality copies of the first issue available. It's a cool collectible regardless, but my guess is that most of the issues on the market were in a warehouse for much of the last 60 years and not in someone's closet.

The original SI's with the cards were reprinted actually, and the reprints look nearly identical to the originals. Those SI cut-out cards are worthless when cut-up outside of the magazine. That SI Topps crap with the graded holder from AAA is some clown in Hawaii in his basement who sliced up tons of old magazines and puts labels on plastic holders that he seals with rivets and then dumps onto the market. There is a lot of that junk floating around now, and it's all worthless and no other grading company will touch any of it.

Thanks for the info A76, I was about to send some cards off to SCH (Some Clown in Hawaii) grading. Good thing I avoided that.

I agree 100% especially about the cards being worthless if removed from the original SI magazine.

This seller bought it off acecardweb, who was a "AAA specialist", which means it was probably one of Roy Huff's many aliases on ebay. He's trying to pass the garbage he got scammed with to someone else now.
