1976 Topps Mike Schmidt PSA 9

Well I come home from working yesterday and this is waiting for me. I take it to the toilet with me and I start to hyper-ventalate! I have found the 76 Schmidt of my dreams! Dripping wet and perfect centering! I break out the loupe I have hidden next to the victoria secret mags but never out of reach when on the toilet. I can't believe my eyes perfection not a print spot to find!Needle corners!
image

Just before the end of my trip to baseball card heaven, I decided to flip it over to read some stats to put me sound of sleep with visions of a 76 Topps George Brett looking the same! Well the 187.00 I spent on my Schmidt was flushed down the toilet when I realize the PSA 9 of my dreams should have an MC qualifier! Thanks PSA for a job well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jackstraw> Just curious. . .what grade do you think that card would have received if you sent it in?

    jackstraw,
How do you get such a nice sharp scan?
  • jackstrawjackstraw Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭
Not sure? I am sure you can adjust the quality of the scan before you scan it?It looks to me that you have a setting in your software screwed up? I am thinking its the contrast?

I am a centering freak and have been looking for a 76 schmidt without the diamond cut for a long time. Yours (which I didn't even notice on Ebay) has that slightest diamond cut so I probably would have passed but I will switch backs with youimage

Davino, it's all about the scanner. My last scanner was doing some bad pictures so I went and bought a HP Scanjet 3970 and it is awesome. This is probably the nicest scanner I've ever had for quality and convenience. I can whip off 100 pictures in no time. Click on my sig line to check out one of my auctions to see the quality of the picture that I put in them.

PS, no I'm not spamming because all I have up is some Garbage Pail Kids that nobody here collects, lol.

I'm no expert on '76 Topps, but then again, that's why PSA is in business. They're the experts. I think the Schmidt looks fine. The back is slightly off centered, but if it's going into a set registry, who'll know the difference? image And if you're selling it, just make sure not to include a scan of the back!

I understand you've been looking for a nice '76 Schmidt for awhile, but PSA are the trained professionals, let's keep that in mind. I'm certain they graded tens of thousands of cards from the set and understand better than you or I, what qualifies as a '9' in their book. Congratulations on finally getting your PSA 9. image

I have a good scanner, less than a year old an Epson CX6400. I may have to adjust the settings....

I would be really pissed with back centering like that. PSA is so darned inconsistent sometimes. Are you going to pursue a refund through either the seller or reimbursement through PSA?

some people still can't appreciate thebighurt, oh well.

jackstraw, if psa won't stand by their guarantee on that card , then they won't on anything. they always give the eye appeal answer or something when someone complains or it "technically meets the guidelines" bull. this card does not meet the guidelines and there is no way they can weasle out of this one.
  • Personally I'd call PSA on that one. It clearly doesn't meet the PSA 9 requirements. You could talk to the seller but heshe may not have known any better.

You are starting to annoy me, and everyone else here. Your posts are nothing short of amusing, and moronic. Also, you seem to be a bit of an A$$ in your last line "Congratulations on finally getting your psa 9 " Stick to collecting your frank Thomas stuff and watching your Marlins. I don' think it would bother anyone here if you returned to the PSA cubical from which you came. Congratulations on finally getting me upset.

Marc I am not sure what I am going to do right now? I am probably going to send it back to PSA someday? I am positive that the seller knows what time of day it is!I am kind of pissed that joe (who is coming off his best show ever) would do business this way? I will never buy another card from him again! Is it the money?Yes so he couldn't sell it at the fort so dump it on ebay! Sorry I won't do it! I know I should have asked for a scan of the back but I didn't. Oh well he lost a good customer!

Serious bummer John. That just plain out sucks when you go from total excitement over finding the holy grail to realizing you just spent a chunk of change on something you would have never bought in person. I can tell you that I have returned cards to PSA in the past for reverse centering, and as long as there is NO border remaining, they have bought the card back. I wish you luck. Frank

    Straw,

Don't let yourself get stuck just because you did not ask for a back scan of the card. That seller should
know better than that for sure. I'd start with him and tell him you want a refund with shipping included.
He sold you a bad nine and he should of known better. I've never bought from the seller and will not
unless he makes good on your purchase. If that don't work then I'd go to Psa. I don't think they would
want this card sold as a nine a second time.

I am angered that a collector is going to be the one screwed here. It should not happen.

Did you leave feedback yet? If the guy is experienced enough to submit the card, he should know that the back is off and either have posted a scan or mentioned it. If he gets nasty, leave him a negative.

I am not going to the seller. I will do exactly what he is going to tell me "I didn't grade the card take it up with PSA" . As far as the front of the card it is absoulutly beautiful and it does make me have second thoughts. The bottom of the back has exactly the width of a line on the ruler which I am guessing is a 64th? and the top has 3/8 of an inch. If I change my mind or find a better copy (which is going to be tough front wise) then I will probably send it in for a buy back.It just ticks me off that I have to ask for a scan of the back(which I will do from now on) when I buy a high dollar (178 dollars is alot to a working slob like me)PSA graded card!I decided last year that I wanted all my HOF and star cards from 76 in SGC holders anyways?I doubt this would have graded any higher than a 92?

  • Maybe it was graded during the $5 special, maybe it was graded at a show, maybe it was a cross over from BCCG??

    Jackstraw:

They certainly can be inconsistent with it. I know that, with the 1955 Bowman set, the back borders are about 40% of the size of the front borders. So you may often have a very well-centered front that just happens to be miscut on the back, because the back borders are so small. Since the set is so darned hard in PSA 8/9/10 anyway - it's not such a big deal. And most collectors do not look at the back so much. But with a set like 1976 Topps - I think the standards should be more well enforced, especially since there is so much border to make it 'easy' to make the grade.
