1946 D/D Jefferson Nickel

dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,719 ✭✭✭✭✭
There is a PCGS MS66 example in the upcoming Bowers ANA sale, along with a MS65 1942 D/Horizontal D. I have never seen a 46 D/D for sale and need one (circulated, PCGS graded for my set if anyone has one)

What do you think these will bring. These are rare and have high starting bids (for me, not for what they may be worth).

How often does a 1946 D/D come up for sale?

I checked Teletrade and Heritage. Teletrade had three on record all MS65's and Heritage had two 1 MS66 and 1 MS65. I recently bought a 1946-D that, from the dealers pictures I thought might be a D/D but it is not the Top 100 RPM-2. I took some pictures and put them on the Nickel Coin Talk Forum in the hopes someone could help me identify what the RPM number might be. Link

Here is a circulated one that sold on eBay, but you can't tell from the picture if it reallly is a D/DLink

    Lilhuff,

Something tells me, with the pops listed below... those coins are either from a broken Registry Set or soon to be in one. I dont have any idea if the coins in that auction are new coins or not, however, either way I think the possibility of either of those coins coming up for auction anytime in the near furture, is very rare.

    1942 D/D MS65 Pop 2/0.... 1 in MS64FS, 0 higher...
    1946 D/D MS66 Pop 1/0 with 9 in MS65FS, 8 in MS66FS...

Here are some numbers from last year on prices realized from auctions:

    Date.... Mintmark.....Grade.... GC.......Variety.......Auction Prices Realized............Total Sold.........Average
    1942........D/D..........AU58........PCGS......FS27.........999.99, 565, 515.43, 561........4/2641.42..........660.36
    1942........D/D..........MS67........ANACS....FS27.........925
    1942........D/D..........MS63FS....PCGS......FS27.........12075
    1946........D/D..........MS66FS....PCGS......FS31.........4945, 8625...............................2/13570............6785

I hope this helps! And both of those coins are moon money to me anyway.

I was the underbidder on the coin on ebay (fixed link).

The problem with raw coins like this is

    1) You do not know if they are the correct variety (most of the varieties I have picked up raw on ebay were not what they claimed they were).
    2) You do not know for sure they do not have problems that will prevent them from being graded by PCGS.

I need this one along with the two 1943 varieties to finish my varieties set. Will keep looking.

The 1942D over D is the rarest of the Jefferson varieties. I believe this coin will bring in excess of $15,000 in today's market. Less than a handful of mint state examples have been sold in the last year. Before purchasing two of these coins in mint state, I had been looking for over 10 years to find one. BTW - the other MS65 is in my set. image

Regarding the1946 D over D, this variety in also very difficult but not even close to the 42D/D in rarity. Examples when found in mint state are more common in full steps, so I would guess this coin will bring without full steps around $2500 - 3000. Many of these coins are in registry sets and there seems to be fewer in the marketplace over the last two years.

    Hope this helps.

As the owner of two circulated PCGS 42-D/Ds (58 and 50) I always keep a lookout on the marketplace for examples when they come up for sale. Ditto for the 46-D/D which I have in MS64.

The fact that I have a 46-D/D in mint state tells me they are more available than the 42-D/D, yet I almost never see the 46-D/D offered for sale. (When I do they seem to always be Mint State). The 42-D/D seems to be semi-regularly available in circulated grades (usually XF or lower), but almost never in Mint State.

I would not be surprised if the 42-D/D MS65 goes for $15,000-$20,000 and the 46-D/D gets close to $10,000.
    When in doubt, don't.

Just so you know, the coin was not the variety. The seller was easy to deal with and returned my money right away.

For this variety, it's always interesting to note as stated in "The Cherrypickers Guide" that "some variety specialist are not completely convinced that this is a D/inverted D, believing it could possibly be a die chip"
It would help if the underlying mint mark showed some serifs or a little more detail. There are other dates from 1946 to 1949 that show irregularities within their mint marks. The popularity of this date may have likely been generated from that of the very rare 1942-D/horiz D.

I saw the 46 D/D in the recent Bowers ANA sale and it looked like a clear omm to me. It did not look like a die chip, but I could see how it would be hard to tell on a circulated example.
