How does ebay work

I don't mean how does it work I mean how do I make it work I guess. Someone came over here and ran through it as if I was intelligent. He had me come up with a ID name, password, question and answer thing about where I lived when I was a kid for some reason I still don't know. Then he explained something called pay pal in a few hundred words that went in one ear and must have gone right out the other. I don't want to go through that again. Is there somewhere I can go to find out what's going on? I would buy stuff but just don't know how.
