WHEN WILL THE SPORTSCARD COMPANIES FALL???

An interesting question no???

How many of you long for the days of one or two sportscard companies or maybe one or two sets from each of maybe 3 or 4 companies?

Todays market is ridiculously flooded in my own personal opinion....what do you think?? Where will it all end???

in the 80s each company made there own set and that was it......fleer donruss and topps......then came UD and its premium issues and people through lighter fluid onto the fire.....so what did they do?? Provide more wood for the lighter fluid and the fire kept rising and rising and rising!!

Premium was the word..and we all clammered to buy 1991 stadium club like it was going out of style.....unfortunately for anyone who invested in that set...IT DID GO OUT OF STYLE.

The hobby seemed to be quiet from around 1993-1998 until the advent of NUMERED ROOKIES CARD, JERSEY CARDS, AND MASSIVE AUTO CARDS....remember the 99 focus kurt warner jersey everyone had to have for 300 or something??......today i dont know where it is...what do you think??

ID LOVE TO KNOW!!!! as you can see from my sig below im strictly vintage..and i chose 1956 and 57 topps to collect...(and heritage!!! image )

    They still make cards????

As far as I am concerned they stopped making cards somewhere in the early 1980'simage

As long as there are sports, there will be numerous sports cards companies.

I'd have to think with so much product and it continuing to get exponetially bigger, there must be people buying this stuff.

The topps people argued prior to the 1981 season that if fleer and donruss were able to produce cards, the entire thing would fall apart...and we all see how that went.

I think at some point there will be an adverse reaction to all of the 1/1s, GU'ed and AU'ed stuff, but for most people, the variety of stuff is a good thing. I know most people frown on the immense variety (it's what led me to quit collecting modern in '93), but for a lot of people, they love the lottery feel to opening cards.

I do enjoy pulling auto's.....and game used jersey's are interesting as well...they make great show pieces in a BASEMENT SPORTS ROOM (not dining room fella!) where a massive amount of memorabilia can be displayed. Ive often thought about making a wall into a huge display case (dont ask me how) and display those auto's, jersey, and bat cards. They got to be good for something..might as well look at them!

people buy cause they want that feeling of opening packs...no matter howold you get its still fun.......i do agree with you there..it would be sad to have that go....

Fleer will go first, they just can't keep up. As big as UD is people are just sick of the crap they pull. I think only topps and
    playoff are safe.

Though I am ahuge fan of Fleer Ultra FOotball since 1998.....minus the year they made RC's numered (vick's year)....i do wish Fleer would go belly up....they purpose since the 90's has been to corrupt and flood the market......

People may be sick of UD, as JS says, but I don't see them going anywhere. In fact, I could see Playoff folding before them. Realistically, Fleer and then Playoff would be the two companies most likely to throw in the towel. Topps probably never will.

  • If the companies are making money they will stay. I don't know what kind of profits they have, but I think Topps and UD are safe.
