? on 50cent walkers with a soft strike

Hi,I have some pretty nice uncirculated walkers i would like to send out to be graded.My question is on the s mints which are known to have soft strikes.Of NGC or PCGS,which of the two would go easier on the soft strikes?Thanks for your answers.

I am going to guess that the "S" walkers you have are in the 40's and you are correct that most were weakly struck which means there is a premium for those coins with good strikes(MS65 & above). I wouldn't submit any 40's walker to the TPG's unless you at least think you have a chance at a 64 as anything below that will end up costing you money should you ever sell it. There is a huge descrepancy between the market of MS64 & MS65 walkers... especially the "S" mint marks. If you get that far then the question you asked is.... "Which one would be the most lenient?" Value wise I'd attempt to put it in a PCGS holder. I had NGC slab a 44S as 64 that I though had a chance at 65, so I really can't tell you which is more strict.

Below are a couple of "S" walkers I got in today. The 1940S was bought in a MS65 PCGS holder and if anything I think it is a high grade one compared to many 65's I have seen. The 1944S is a green label(2nd generation) PCGS MS64 coin that I was hoping the coin was better than the pictures so that I could crack it out and resubmit it. So much for the theory of those "undergraded" green label coins. It's a clean coin with very few marks, but you can see the couple of areas I marked on each which shows the distinct difference between the strikes. There are other things to look at, but when it comes to all walkers and the "S" mints if there is not head & arm/hand detail you won't find the coins in 65 & higher holders. Take a look at the '44S and if your coins have somewhat of the detail then it is probably worth your time to slab them. If not.... I really think you are spending wasted money.

41-s has always been known as the toughest to find well struck. 44-s is awfully tough though if not tougher in my opinion. 42-s and 43-s are hard but can be found occasionally. 45-s and 46-s and and most other dates come sharp. Actually, I don't know why, but 44-p's are often weak too. I'm not sure about the S Walkers prior to 1941, I don't think they are as bad as the early 40's.

By the way...a rare opportunity...my well struck 41-s is for sale.

Back in the Boom of 88 i put together a short set of Walkers in MS65/MS64.

No way could i afford the 41,2,3,4 S in MS65 so those were 64's

Better dates in the short set are 42 D, 45 S and perhaps the 46 S,with the exception of the other S mints which are all better dates.

I still have a 41 S ANACS MS64 from then that is ready for the Krakatoa (was cracked from a PCGS holder),eye appeal all day long.

Problem is the weak strike.

My feeling is that Mint State,should mean just that !

If it left the Mint weakly struck,that should be taken in to account.

It is going to NGC,cracked out !
