M ROOP STORAGE BOXES? MY THOUGHTS?

JUST CURIOUS . . . RECENTLY PURCHASED FOR THE FIRST TIME A COUPLE DOZEN STORAGE BOXES (AROUND $12.95 EACH) AND HAVE TO ADMIT WAS A BIT DISAPPOINTED. THERE IS NO PLACE TO LABEL THE BOXES, NO WAY TO HOLD THE CARDS IN PLACE IF THE BOX IS NOT FULL, AND IN GENERAL . . . THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A CARDBOARD BOX THAT WAS OVERPRICED. ANYONE ELSE SHARE MY SENTIMENTS OR WAS I SIMPLY EXPECTING TO MUCH.image

They look nice, but way too expensive.

I do not own any of those boxes, but for 5 bucks a PSA box will hold 60 cards.

I own a few Roops binders, and the other Roop storage boxes and I enjoy them.

They sell plastic sliders that will hold them in place.

As far as overpriced, it's all in the eye of the beholder. They sell a 4-row box that's on sale for $40 currently (normally $50), and those are great too.

MJ Roop makes a very high quality product...some people enjoy paying for it, some don't.

I got a wood Roop box for Christmas and I love it. They're well made, and talk about an awesome presentation for your key cards or set.

Has anyone seen/tried/purchased one of this guy's cases? They look pretty nice, although it looks like he actually sells under a second ID and at a different price point. Thoughts?

Thank you for the link. Those boxes look really nice. Wood finish as opposed to the black paper.

$29.95 sounds more reasonable and I wish MJ Roop would adjust its prices.
  • Never bought the $12 boxes. But the binders were worth it for me. I am looking at their $40 box next. I do also like the $5 PSA box for toploaders etc...
Thanks for sharing your feedback on the 12 boxes.

They aren't black 'paper' as you say.

"Box is made with heavy conservation board and buckram cloth."

Not going to get into an argument over semantics with you; you obviously don't feel they are worth the money, many other of Roops' satisfied customers would say otherwise.

The pricing for the best will always be above what most are willing to pay.

Not sure I'd like the look/weight/feel of wood, and it possibly scratching my slabs.

Quality / cost aside, I wish my collection was focused enough to need only a few of these boxes or binders. When your collection of graded material gets past a certain point, you need a larger storage solution.

I agree the wood boxes are nice for presentation, but I never need to "present" a few dozen cards to anyone. As far as I know, there is no publicly-available storage solution for people with large collections. It's a matter of balancing access / display with security / fire protection, and we've all come up with our improvised methods that we may or may not be happy with.

Roop should put some R&D into storage-display on a bigger scale.
  • I just built myself a box to hold my 1972 Topps set. It is sized to hold the set perfectly. Six rows (one for each series) of 132 cards each. It is roughly 2'x2'x6". I used 3/4" birch plywood with brass hardware and it looks very nice. Nicer than the Roop boxes I've seen The best part...it only cost me about $75 and a few hours in the shop. I realize that not everyone is a carpenter, but it doesn't take a whole lot of skill to build a box like this. I mean for little more than the price of one of the Roop boxes, you can build a nice felt lined box custom sized to perfectly hold your set, no matter the number of cards.

Jason, how about a pic to show us how it looks?

This is part of a gun cabinet I converted with shelves to hold about 600 graded cards, with room for tallboys and large memorabilia in the bottom. The top row displays 5 cards I'm fondest of at the moment. Of course, it's locked most of the time. No room at the inn for commons, even '52 and '53 Topps, so I use some sliding shelves in a big ol' Husky Pro tool cabinet that locks. Maybe the simplest solution is to make the ROOM very secure, then I can display everything out in the open.
