PSA cert numbers, any logic?

What is the logic in the numbering? I thought it was chronological, but obviously is not. Then PSA grades #8,000,000 and the cert number is indeed 08000000. What is that about? How do you tell if the card is a recent grade? Or one that is 12 years old?

I think the PSA cert numbering system is terrific.

I suppose you could get the info of what cert #'s were used when
from some long time submitters who've kept track, but what difference would it make ?

PSA's grading standards have remained solid and unchanging throughout the years ! image

  • Every PSA cert number I've ever seen has either a 0 or 1 within the first two numbers. That's the only constant I know.

The cards graded in 2004 and so far this year have started with either 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. Hope that helps.

OK, so it's not that bad, but close. It's been mostly 3 in recent months as far as I can tell, but I have also received several other numbers recently: 1, 4, 8, 9. I can detect no pattern as to which type of card gets what.

I wonder if PSA has been mixing up the numbers in a deliberate effort to avoid having cards pinpointed as to the time of grading.

Finally dabighurt gives us a image to show it's all been a joke. Wink again if your first name is really Joe and your last name starts with either O or V.
  • They are consistant alright. This why there is no need to improve on the case design, since it would essentially date the card. I have a PSA 6 old flip and let me tell you, this thing is an honest 6!!! (Yea right!!) Probably couldn't get a 4 out of it if I cracked and resent it in. I just don't get how #8,000,000 is indeed cert number 08000000. sounds like a bunch of quackery.
