When did Canseco become a martyr?

This hearing is crazy. Canseco is acting like he wrote this book for the good of baseball and all sports. We all know he wrote that book because he is p*ssed off at baseball.
But so far, this hearing is nothing but a Congress glory day.

  • IMHO I think these Congressmen should be more outraged that the
OMB can't even conduct an audit of Congress because of how incredibly screwed up these primadonnas are and how much money they p**s away!!

St. Jose? Makes me want to puke!

  • This hearing is a joke. One of the congressmen should take McGwire to task.
They should tell him that he is partly responsible for the deaths of the young athletes.
Does't McGwire realize that he was the poster boy for steriods. Doesn't he realize that youngsters saw what andro and other supplements did for him and they followed his lead. He should be ashamed of himself for being so smug.

Congressional hearings are well known to be circuses.
I had the opportunity to appear before one but didn't waste my time/money going to DC only to witness Congressmen pretending to give a damn about the subject.

This is not the way to handle the problem of steroids in sports.

Baseball was aware of all this for years they didnt care bc the fans came back and the money was rolling in.

arent we at war still???? shouldnt congress be more concered about getting our armed forces home?

do the testing leave these guys alone.

  • OMG They made a decision to USE DRUGS you act like he shot them up.. When people decide to take responability for there own actions this world we be better.. O I saw Mark use them so I did to !!!! Lets not ask the parents where they were in there kids lives to allow Mark McQuire or any other player to lead them... Sorry but the PC s**t in this country has to be replaced by Self Responability..

I think that Schilling and Canseco are going to get into a fistfight in the hall after the hearing is over. Unfortunately, Canseco will win.

Did you hear that the glorified 10 day suspension for a first offense isn't in the new policy?

The commissioner has the option for opting in a $10,000 fine and no suspension.

Anything that gets this steroid PROBLEM (and yes, it's a problem....drugged up ball players CHEATING their way) more limelight is a good thing.

Yes there are pressing concerns, but how big of a problem are the youth of this country shooting up roids to emulate their heroes? If you can't look past the nose on your face and see that steroids aren't a problem for the pros, that it's a problem for the collegiate and high school kids, then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes the pros have a much better set of steroids to use; they have doctors of the highest quality and trainers getting the best stuff to get huge. These high school and college kids shooting up are using whatever they can get their hands on to get big, to get the contracts and fame of those they emulate. And THAT is the problem.

I agree congress should be more interested in our war. our economy. and our debt. let the mlb take care of baseball.

Being a parent myself i will make sure i know what my kid is doing or kids someday. its up to the parents to take control of there kids.
not mark mcgwire sammy sosa etc...
  • Parenting will be a start and I don't want the Goverment being the Parent nor do I want any baseball player or anyone else being my son's role model.. Thats the role of the parent an untill we quit blaming others for our failures as parents it will never change..
BTW Why not call up Hip Hop artist that promote Underage Sex, Drugs and killing Police Officers !!!
Lets talk about Drug Co. advertising every drug you can think of every five minutes on TV.. That has a big impact on our kids and its done on goverment regulated TV.. We are a culture of drugs for every illness or procieved illness we have a drug !! Not just 1 but 2 or 3 to pick from.. Its not Just Baseball effecting our kids and the Congress knows this But they did look good GrandStanding today..

please, McGwire the poster boy for steroids? no, he has skated through easier than even Barry Bonds.

Jason Giambi has taken the brunt of all of this for these cheaters. HE IS the poster boy, like it or not .....

Parents should be held responsible for there kids! not athletes.. If your to busy to educate your kids on drugs, then maybe you need to find a new job to have more time with your kids!

That's absolutely true, but there still needs to be a cultural rejection of steroids. Really, until today's hearing, Conseco was the only one with a platform through that book of his. I've heard him say that there's no problem with steroids. If I were an 18-year-old athlete with marginally enough ability to play big league baseball, it would be awfully tempting to take the stuff to improve my chances. Remember when you were 18 and it seemed like 30 was old age? The best part of the hearing today may have been that Conseco came off like a complete nincompoop, and had to retract some of what he said in his book. We now have proof that steroid use causes loss of IQ points.

That's a fantasy land that in this country, where athletes are labeled as heroes, just can't happen.

Pro athletes are revered as gods...look at the money, the status, the prestige they acquire.

And then you sit there and try to say that a parent is going to be able to easily convince their kids that doing whatever it takes to be a pro? That's pure fantasy.

Yes it's easy to sit there and say 'my kid won't ever do roids!' Or whatever other drug of choice you want to substitute...the fact of the matter is steroid use has been on the rise for a decade, and it's getting worse and worse, where junior high kids are experimenting with it now.

But you sit there in your world called fantasyland and close your eyes and pretend it's not happening.
  • kuhlmannkuhlmann Posts: 3,326 ✭✭
it wont happen in my house bc i have a great relationship with my kid! and if my wife and i decide to have another it wont happen then either.

to blame your own mistake about not taking care of your own family on a role model is a coward! (dont get me wrong i feel for those families who lost there children. myself wouldnt blame other people though)

so axtell if you have children and they get messed up on drugs dont run to congress! look yourself in the mirror bc your the failure! bc you didnt spend time educating your kids on drugs.

Like someone else said in this thread big mac jose sammy etc.. didnt give your kid the drug! you as a parent did by not being involved. its a copout for parents to blame athletes for there mistake!
  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭
    Two things:
    1) Like Charles Barkley said "Im not a role model"
    2) There shouldnt be ONLY baseball players at this hearing. There should also be Football, Olympic, and representatives from any other sport they feel steroids is a problem. They were talking about a Federal law to cover all sports the same...then have freaking atheletes from other sports!

If I'm not ultimately responsible for my kids, who is? I'm not living in a fantasyland by saying I'm going to allow our society to put their fates in the hands of complete strangers.

I have significant problems with drug laws in our society today, but when it comes to parenting: the buck stops here.

You've got the parents of a kid who died protecting terrorists in Gaza suing Caterpillar, the maker of the bulldozer that he got run over with.
    Huh?

    A) My kids are smart enough to know what is right and what is wrong.
    B) If they didn't, I would do everything in my power including hiring a deprogrammer to teach them.
    C) If they still managed to do the wrong thing, I wouldn't blame Caterpillar or Mark McGwire - I would blame myself for failing or them for being plain stupid.

No one ever said parenting is easy. In fact its' the opposite. It's a daily grind of doing the right thing and teaching them every step of the way. It's hard, but if you aren't up to it, then don't have kids.

I'd like you to tell that to the parents of the kids who have killed themselves due to the side-effects of steroid use.

I'd like you to tell that to the parents and family of kids who have been permanently injured due to steroid use.

It's easy to sit in your ivory tower and call the parents of kids who get mixed up in alcohol and drugs of all types (not just steroids) and say they are poor parents, but the fact is kids ALL kids make mistakes. Some mistakes just reverberate forever in accidents and deaths. For you sit there so smugly and call out parents who have had kids who has made mistakes of this nature is just pure unadulterated ignorance. Parents as a whole don't set out to have kids who make mistakes...sometimes they happen.

You should be ashamed of yourselves for making such blanket statements.

To me, the biggest outrage is that the players who took steroids without a prescription broke the law. And lets's face it, very few if any had a prescription. Under the 1990 Anabolic Steroids Act it is unlawful for any person knowingly or intentionally to possess an anabolic steroid unless it was obtained directly, or pursuant to a valid prescription or order, from a practitioner, while acting in the course of his professional practice (or except as otherwise authorized). A simple possession conviction is punishable by a term of imprisonment of up to one year and/or a minimum fine of $1,000. Simple possession by a person with a previous conviction for certain offenses, including any drug or narcotic crimes, must get imprisonment of at least 15 days and up to two years, and a minimum fine of $2,500, and individuals with two or more such previous convictions face imprisonment of not less than 90 days but not more than three years, and a minimum fine of $5,000. Distributing anabolic steroids, or possessing them with intent to distribute, is a federal felony. An individual who distributes or dispenses steroids, or possesses with intent to distribute or dispense, is punishable by up to five years in prison (with at least two additional years of supervised release) and/or a $250,000 fine ($1,000,000 if the defendant is other than an individual). Penalties are higher for repeat offenders. In New York State, anabolic steroids are classified as Schedule II controlled substances, and their possession can be prosecuted as a class "A" misdemeanor criminal offense, punishable by up to a year in jail. Sale of anabolic steroids is a class "D" felony in New York, regardless of the quantity sold, punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Did Congress have a right to make these guys testify? Absolutely!
