    Very cool.

You should get the finder to come tell us the tale, over on the MD forum.

If I dug a cache of Bust halves, you'd have to hospitalize me.

He showed me a few of the coins (and some photos) a couple of years ago. They were absolutely gorgeous!

His theory was that whoever hid the coins put the punch in them to trace if anyone found the coins and started spending them.

When I bought the coins, he mentioned that Bowers & Merena would be selling them for him. I was holding mine to wait for the Bowers hype, but it doesn't look like the Bowers Sale is going to happen.

  • There are stories of Confederate sympathizers burying gold and silver after the war in hopes of reforming the Confederate government and trying again. It could also be from a Civil War era hoard as these coins were likely to be hoarded. One can only speculate. I also wonder if any more caches like this will turn up.

I actually do not know. I seem to recall seeing a picture of the coins loose in the hole, but I may be wrong.
