Orientation of 1954 Topps backs

Is there any rhyme or reason to the orientation of '54 Topps reverses? Some are "left-handed" and some are "right-handed." While nobody stores cards this old in standard card boxes anymore, it is the kind of thing that makes sorting by card number tougher. If you have the front of the cards all "right-side-up" on some of them the card number will be on the reverse of the top left corner and on others it is below the bottom right corner.

Also I don't imagine there are variations of the back orientations for the same card are there?

I believe that the difference in back orientation is due to the fact that Topps printed the card fronts in alternating right-side-up and upside-down rows. This is due to the tops of the cards that year having no border.

All the backs on the sheet were oriented the same way.

Topps also did this with their 1969 football set.
