PSA or BGS for Basketball Rookies pre 1980?

I have some vintage basketball cards I want graded. I'm contemplating PSA or BVG/BGS. I hear BGS is a tough grader. I wanna go with the company that can give the best value for my vintage basketball cards. Which one holds more value? Better resale? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

  • PSA is the best way to go on most any card that you want graded. If you do your homework on Ebay, I would suspect that there are hundreds more PSA graded vintage basketball cards than BVG/BGS. Good luck with your decision.

PSA nearly dominates the basketball vintage market...with SGC a somewhat distant second. BGS has good resale value for cards in the 80's onward.

Whatever mistakes BGS/BVG may have made in the past, they are "currently" grading very hard as though they are trying to prove a point. For modern cards, I'd use them only if I was really sure of the condition and only if it was a very high grade card since the resale value tends to be more. For vintage, I'd definitely go for the PSA. Despite BVG's claim that they take special consideration for vintage cards, I've found that they grade vintage just as harshly as they do modern. Several cards I've sent them recently got pounded grade-wise and two were found to be "trimmed". After resubmitting them to PSA, they graded much better and the two "trimmed" cards graded fine (one even got an 8).

My guess is that people here would recommend PSA, and those at Beckett would recommend Beckett.
I decided to go with PSA myself since it seems to dominate the hobby and their cards get better $$$ on Ebay.
