Lincoln cent rpm and ddo collectors

Hi,
I would like to hear from Lincoln cent collectors that collect rpms and ddo..
Just how they go about this. Do you try to have one of every rpm....Just all rpm-001....anacs slabs....ect
Basicly how you have gone about building your collection of these.

I have just recieved my first grades from anacs.. For me, I like double dies and rpms. But thier are so many double dies
I guess the real minor ones I don't mind passing on but could find 50 to 75 I would like to have no problem.
One I have is 1959-p ddo-001 , It's funny several times I thought i had this one, saving about 15 coins on different occasions
But when I accually hit a roll with several it was very apperant.. Same with 1963-d ddo-001 been looking with a loop inside that 3
on a thousand coins. When i found one I could see it with my glasses.
Anyway I am moving into this area, and i am just curious too how one builds thier collection. Or what somebody may consider a set.

I think it could be a real challenge to obtain one of every rpm from any one year, Some years like 1960-d could take a long time!

Since you are doing it the right way and going through rolls, you probably realize any order or organization isn't going to happen, you take what you get. I hope you are able to make a better market for them through your ebay sales, if you decide to sell any. Good luck!

I collect them as they either come up for sale or I find one. I toss the minor ones back in rolls but keep the major DDO's. I don't collect RPM's, save a few cool ones like the 38 s/s/s/s and the 09-S/S, since there are just so many. Some dates every coin seems to be an rpm of some sort so they just don't excite me like doubled dies do.

I decided to collect a complete set of 1972 DDO cents, that would be 10 coins including one example of a no problem 1972 and DDO's 1-9. I am only missing Die # 4

Everytime I find an error on a Lincoln Cent I put it in a 2"x2" folder, lable it by date and mint mark and note on the bottom what it the error. I'm up to 6 boxes as of yesterday. I use the boxes the 2"x2" folders come in to store these error coins. I don't just save the ddo's and the rpm's, also double rims, offsets, missing letters and numbers, faded or weak strikes, goofy discolorations and just about any thing else that is an error. I've got one 41 with the 1 falling to the left or could be a 47 with the top missing. It's cute and adds to the collection. Not doing it for a someday profit makes it fun. To bad about the cost of the 2"x2" holders and staples to close them though. Then there is that book on Looking Through Lincoln Cents by coppercoins. Ever since I bought that dumb thing I can't stop examining every cent with a 14X magnifier which is increasing my error collection massively.

You mention the book quite frequently, do you post on that forum, what's your handle?

  • Hi Chris,

My primary source is the same as yours, rolls and bags of Lincolns. Every now and then an estate sale with rpm's comes up locally. I make sure somebody bids on them for me. I'm not trying for one of each rpm, I'm not even sure that's possible. I'll settle for most of the ddo's and a good number of rpm's. I'd like to have all the ones pictured in the major publications.

I used to use ANACS and NGC for certs. I've used the PCGS error service once already, after Roger's 72 DDO submission I'll be doing it more often.
