Asterisk/star after serial numbers on currency

Hello,

I noticed that certain American currency bills have an asterisk, or star after the serial numbers.

Could anybody please tell me why this is, please, and if they are worth, or will one day be worth more than their face value?

Thanks.

  • Star notes are when a note is defective and has to be destroyed by the US Mint. The US Mint then uses the detroyed serial number and reprints the note and then places a "*" to denote that this note is a replacement for the original, which was destroyed.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Cameo,

Thank you for that information. Any extra current worth of these type of notes, or future worth?
  • Yes,

What you should look for is center ness along the edge of the note. The more square the higher the grade. Second, the note should be in UNC condition. Much depends on the serial number (are they consecutive and how low) and the date.

    Hope this helps.
