Post-1970 card you are most proud of and why...

Here's mine...

1976 Jim Rice SGC 96

The white dot on Jim's forehead is a fuzz that is static-held inside the holder! Frustrating. Anyway, I'm most proud of this card as it's the nicest copy I have ever seen of this card and it's tougher to locate than people think. I searched like a hound for over a deacade for this copy.
I wanna see some tough cards scanned here if you got 'em! Maybe even more than one. How about just post your eye-candy!!! I need to see some killer cards!!!

    Phil:

    That Rice is phenomenal. Congratulations.

Two of my favorites at the moment are my Red Barn Schmidt graded PSA 10 [one of those cards that will cost you over $100 in any condition] and my 1982 FBI Disc graded PSA 2 Good [again - you can't find one....]

Here's a scan of the reverse of the Red Barn:

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Hey I remember Red Barn! image
Plus it's from Kenosha,Wi.which is about 30 minutes from Milwaukee.
    Cool
  • Marc,
What made 'em so togh? Was it small, regional distribution? The way they were packaged? Also, I am breaking another set case of 88's. Stay tuned...I am inspired to find the Ripken, Davis and Schmidt. My first Schmidt 10 is yours. Bring on E.D.!!!! I'm shipping out your other stuff first, however. I'll get the other stuff broke over Spring break it looks like. In the meantime, how 'bout posting some more colorful Schmidt stuff...I love those tastylake issues.

You might want to talk to Bob Dole or Rafael Palmeiro...
  • ajw,
    I don't get it image

What does Bob Dole have to do with Eric Davis?

I'm just kidding. That was awesome!!! image

The most dysfunctional thing these days is my NEED for a 1986 Topps Eric Davis card!!!

I haven't seen a Rice as nice as that one - and believe me, I have been looking. Cool card, Phil!

My favorite card is a 1976 Topps Rod Carew #400, PSA 10. I have always liked the rich colors of this card and it is currently a 1/1. Carew was one of my favorite players growing up and 1976 was the first year I started to collect baseball cards. Sorry, I don't have a link (I don't have a website). I do have a scan I can email you if you like.

This may not be a bid deal to most, but when I acquire a high dollar card, it is usually for resale because I just can't afford to keep it. I opened a pack last year and got a $300 card. I sent it to PSA and it got a 9. It is a 1994 Leaf Limited Alex Rodriguez RC. Since I didn't have any money invested in it, I decided to keep it.

    dgf:

Regional distribution just makes it a very very tough card. It's not condition sensitive, generally - just a matter of finding the card. Much like trying to put together a nice run of OPCs or something - the Red Barns are one of the rarest of the various discs distributed in the 1970s [although the MSA Promo Backs are also tough...]

The reference to e.d. was making fun of Bob Dole's erectile dysfunction ads. Something that I am sure is not a problem for someone with as many Rugrats as you ;-)

Classic on-deck pose of Hernandez with nearly impossible centering. One of a handful of favorites from 84D. PSA 10 1/1

Nice pick-up on the Baines BTW.......

I've got 6 of them right here. They are the cornerstones of my Frank collection as a unit, and I think "pride" is just about the right word when I display them. I bought the first 5 for $600 back in 1998 (they booked for $2600 at the time) and it took me about 2 years to find the 6th, the batting glove card. When it came up on ebay, it was the ideal swatch, the "Big Hurt" logo. I had to outbid a well-known, very determined Frank collector, but I did it. I rarely see any of these come up for sale, and when I do they still go for over book. I'm just glad I was able to acquire most of them at once and cheaply, and was able to finish it off, something I am rarely able to do with expensive cards.
    WANTED:

2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

A card from the post "Topps only" simpler, vintage-esque time frame, which ended at 1981 and later.....................

....which I might be proud of, if I could ever find a centered one, would be 1988 Topps # 759 A's Team Leaders, Big Mac and Mr 40/40 together.

I have personally handled over 200 copies and seen more as well, but never , even one , with near perfect centering. Other 1988 leader cards, like the fine Os one with Ripken and Murray together are available with good centering. Please excuse my drifting away from the real flavor of the original topic, but has anyone seen a 50/50 L-R and T-B centered one ?? The goofy wave-like border trim seems never right on this card.

Perhaps a few years ago Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco were more popular and respected, times change and so do our perceptions of sports heroes. Regardless of anything, I still think guys who can hit 70 HRs or can date Madonna are somewhat remarkable.

  • 1984 Fleer Update PSA 10 Dwight Gooden

Anyone who has been around the hobby for a while knows how BIG this card was in 1985-1986. Scarce, and a great picture of a young Dwight Gooden. Every time I look at it I think of one thing: Such promise, such potential. MAN oh MAN he was awesome!!!!

    ....then the drugs.......

    what could have been.....

I know some here will call this modern junk but I really could care less. This has always been one of my favorite cards. I am a huge Cowboy and Emmitt Smith fan. For me its about collecting for the love and fun of it, not just for high value cards. This card will always be special to me.

I kid you not: I read this while a Levitra ad was running on TV image
  • Sweet Emmitt. I agree on the 84 Fleer Gooden. I collect Gooden and Straw pretty hardcore these days. The 85 Donruss Gooden is my favorite card of him. There are many close seconds. I like the 84 Fleer Strawberry the best with the 85 Donruss and 87 Topps running closely behind. I can't wait until I locate the '86 Topps Eric Davis of my dreams!

I'm going to cheat a little, and say that I have two post 1970 cards I'm most proud of:

    #1).

    image

Back when the 1992 Upper Deck boxes first came out, my boss at the card store I worked at and I wondered if we'd ever be lucky enough to get the #1 (or 406, or 521, or 2,500, you get the picture) of 2500 Williams out of a pack. While I didn't get this out of a pack, when I saw it up for sale on eBay a few years ago, I did everything I could to make sure that I got the card. This cards is getting cremated with me.

    2).

    image

Best card I ever pulled out of a pack. Unless I get a Ruth, Wagner, Cobb, or Clemente cut signature out of a pack, I doubt I'll ever have a better pack find.
