Opinions on Vintage Crossovers

I'm interested in the opinions of board members on the old question of "to crack or not to crack" when trying to crossover vintage cards to PSA. I have some SGC, GAI and CSA cards that are very nice, but am not sure whether to crack them out and submit or to submit in their holders.

What are your current opinions on this topic?

Thanks in advance.

Crack out after you have gone over them with a loupe 100 x's. You will never get Joe to cross a card to a PSA holder in the same grade! You might as well mail him a check and then mail the cards in for the graders where Joe doesn't ever see them.

Depends on whether you want them for your collection or to sell.

With CSA - there is a greater possibility the card is trimmed. It might be better to submit to a cross-over service.

With star cards - you are potentially making a hundred or thousand+ dollar bet on the cross if you crack. In those instances, a $15 review by PSA does not seem unreasonable.

With commons, and lower dollar cards, crack and resubmit seems best - but first, spend a lot of time with the card before cracking. If you do not think it has a 90+% chance of crossing - don't bother. Anything lesser than that, submit in the holder via crossover. Greater than that, crack and resubmit.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Hi- I've popped two nice looking sgc 92 cards out of their holders and sent them into psa raw. Both came back 9's!!! One was a 1970 topps super glossy Joe Namath and the other was a sgc 92 football common from 1969. I think popping nice ones out of their holders and sending them in raw is the way to go! Paul
  • You have to take the cards out of the old holders before you resubmit.
  • From experience. Always crack-out. PSA is cruel to slabbed cross-overs.
  • Apparently, I have had much better luck than some of these folks.
I have sent in maybe a dozen or two cards for crossover. Uncracked. About 2/3's of them have crossed striaght over. Never an upgrade but i have heard of those. I have even crossed 10's to 10's and 9's to 9's. It is worth the money, no doubt. Of the ones that didn't cross, most were my fault on re-examination. Usually a centering problem that I did not look close enough on. But there have been a couple that have fallen through that whole process without crossing or my fulling understanding. Those I will crack and resubmit. Seems once you crack it, it is hard to put it back in the original holder. Take all the options you have before that.

I'd say always crack out, but if you happen to be crossing T200's from SGC to PSA beware- the two companies have a different view of miscuts on this issue, and you can be left with a card no one will reslab. Happened to me on a few.

My only experience is crossing over two SGC 88's to straight PSA 8's - and they were still in the holders when I did it.

  • Thanks, everyone, for all of the input. It sounds like I need to crack 'em before I submit 'em! I would tend to believe that PSA is much less forgiving on cards still in the holders, as they want to "be the toughest" on the grading of all of the companies.

I have also had pretty good luck in crossing cards over in the original holders. 70+% of the cards crossed (from SGC and BGS holders) and I even got a couple of very nice bumps (Clemente rookie from a BGS-5 (not BVG) to a
    PSA-6, '67 Banks from a SGC-86 to a PSA-8).

The ones that did not cross were in SGC holders and were very close on centering -- these guys needed to be cracked out to get them into the equivalent holder.

My advice would be to give it a shot in the original holders and then re-evaluate when you get the results. As MS stated, if they are high dollar cards, it is a very minor price to pay.
