There is no market for 70s baseball?

Over the past few months I have seen several negative comments about 70s cards. For example, in a recent post there was this: "1977 commons are 1) not vintage and 2) worth very little."

So for those of you who consider 70's modern and "worth very little", here is a snapshot of some auctions that I have watched or participated in (price=ending price+shipping):

775 Lot of 77 Topps Baseball - $64
90 Different EX-MT 1976 - $12.96
400 1976, 20 1977 - $58.51
57 EXMT 1976 "Fillers" - $10.86

So for commons we're looking at between $.08-.15 / card - which isn't worthless (to me at least). For those of you who are sitting on tons of 70s, you might want to reconsider selling them.

But before you do: PM me first! (Looking for 77-75 commons in NRMT< condition) image

pm me if you are interested in the remnants some vending boxes from 76 and77. no psa 9's in there but definately a lot of nm, nm/mt cards . also , have 79 and 80 if anyone wants to make an offer. the 80 boxes have only had stars pulled for the most part so you will be able to find all grade commons in there.

You were talking about a lot that was basically all commons in the VgEx-Ex range. Between $0.02-0.04/card would be the fair market value and that apparently what was the realized price. To think that this lot was worth more (which you implied that you paid more for), was probably not realistic. These lots, however, are overall better conditioned I believe and with Beckett High at $0.30 for NM, $0.08-0.15/card sounds about right.

Thanks for posting these links, I do have three 70s sets (74, 76 and 77) that would be in the Ex-NM range but I still need to go through them in detail.

It just goes to show how one man's trash is another's treasure, right?
BTW I feel the same way about the 80s...

That's what the hobby is based on. When you think in practical terms, spending this amount of money on pieces of cardboard is almost absurd. But, pleasure and happiness is relative when it comes to us collectors.

The auctions that went for $60 have HOF player cards and are in high grade.

Your lots were in mid-grade and all commons.

I don't think any more needs to be said.

jskirwin, I just sold a lot of 68 1978 Topps for just about .50 per card, all commons, all MINT MINT MINT.

Don't be fooled by this place image There are LOTS and LOTS of collectors who dig the 70's image

    ISO 1978 Topps Baseball in NM-MT High Grade Raw 3, 100, 103, 302, 347, 376, 416, 466, 481, 487, 509, 534, 540, 554, 579, 580, 622, 642, 673, 724__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ISO 1978 O-Pee-Chee in NM-MT High Grade Raw12, 21, 29, 38, 49, 65, 69, 73, 74, 81, 95, 100, 104, 110, 115, 122, 132, 133, 135, 140, 142, 151, 153, 155, 160, 161, 167, 168, 172, 179, 181, 196, 200, 204, 210, 224, 231, 240

  • I think most people would consider 25 year old cards that survive as mint going for 8-15 cents each to be essentially worthless. However, it sounds like you have some good leads for your interest. Your just lucky what you like isn't going to cost you much!! I wish I was so fortunate. PSA 7 commons run me $200+ each. ugh, now i'm gonna start collecting the 74s from my birth year!! well... not quite yet.

    good luck!

I don't think low to mid-grade commons from the late '70s are entirely worthless. Some people are into well-worn cards, even from the modern era. I just don't think there is much money in them, is all, because there is so much high-grade material available from those years. Even NM-MT doesn't bring much money any more. I see PSA 8 HOFers from the late '70s go unsold even with a min. bid less than what it cost to grade them.

So sure, there's an audience for those well-handled commons from 1976-80, but they don't want to pay more than a couple pennies per card in bulk.

Those of us who grew up during that decade can take comfort in the fact that while the fashions and politics stunk, the baseball sure didn't. Hank Aaron. Mike Schmidt. Pete Rose.

I have seen discussions here stating that the 70s cards will never become popular, but I have been noticing the prices creeping up over the past 6 months that I've gotten fanatical about collecting.

I wish they'd stay low until I finished my mid-70s sets!

    BIG difference between NM-MT '72 and VG-EX '77. Heck, even NM-MT '77.
  • I was answering the 70's are worthless part not the year or grade..

Is the difference really BIG??? I'm not sure. Five years apart, although the 72's were printed in two series correct??
