I search very hard for nice original AU Bust halves!!!

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
And it seems to be tougher to find them as each week passes. Anyone else feel the same way?
So while I pick up a decent AU Bust half once in a while...... I just LOVE picking these off and am appreciating them
quite a bit. MUCH cheaper too!!! Is this one "Crusty" enough? image

Even pieces such as the one I am posting aren't very easy to find.

  • STMAN,

I've been considering picking up a couple of these as type (and also because I think they're kinda cool, historically); but, I have zero "feel" for the market with these coins. When you say you are "picking these off" what do you mean? Picking them off where/how? What's the price range for original AU (and EF) examples? Would you consider buying cleaned versions at discounted prices or avoid those altogether? Thanx.

image I think it's a "Great" example and I agree with your statement also!!! More and more collectors are moving into this series making it tough for all!. Congrat's, Lee
  • stman,

That is very crusty and very nice. I too like trying to find the nice original bust halfs in au. You're right, it isn't easy.

It is "crusty" and original. I just would not call this one an AU. Still, the toning is the nice old silver toning. I have seen some bust halves in AU50 holders (1st tier grading companies) that were dipped white. Old circulated silver should not be flashy white.

Hi, as far as my statement of "picking these off." Yes I only meant buying them when I see what I feel is a nice
    original lower circulated grade.

As far as prices for nice original problem free Bust halves, naturally it can vary. I can say they usually trade for much more than
stated prices in the sheets. An AU-55-AU-58 can probably go for anywhere from 400.00 on up. It's not unusual
for them to be in the high 500.00 range and higher for nice high end pieces.

Would I buy a cleaned version at a discounted price? Had you asked me this a long time ago I'd have said NO.
But after learning to appreciate these coins for what they are (Most have been cleaned) I have bought a cleaned one.

And would need to consider the right coin. For example I bought a cleaned "Triple profile" Bust half because
I like the coolness factor and so far it was the only one I've had a chance at to buy. (I'm currently working on getting it a tanimage)
I would recommend if you only want an example for a type set to try and find a nice problem free example.

This example I just posted is in a PCGS holder graded VF-30. I still paid strong considering what sheet prices show, but
it is well worth it in my opinion. Many times these will trade in the next grade up (value wise) and sometimes more.

All that I've written (add disclaimer) is only my opinion from personal experiences.

<< <i>wife: But Sweetheart, didn't they make those coins any year other than 1827? >>

image OK OK, The one I posted is only the 2nd 27 I have. Hey I'm glad you're "obsessed"
with the 27's as perhaps that will keep you away from ALL the others.image

Now you are aware I'm "obsessed" with the double profiles. These Busties are neat as there are so many ways to collect them.
Some like to collect by variety, some like the messed up edges, some like the messed up faces, and some like the "27's."

Just a kick I got on while trying to complete my Overton set for the year. There are more die marriages for this year than any other--49 of them plus 4 remarriages. (I currently lack only 127 (R-5++) 137 (high R6) and 148 and 149 ( both R-7) It's not going to happen (short of either winning the lottery or getting VERY lucky underneath a cherry tree) but I can dream. Meanwhile. I just keep aquiring more.

mgoodm3, I like your coin very much. Looks like a AU55 as is one of mine I am posting. This one has a pretty dramatic
"Double Profile." Not original, but I still really like it.

Well, if we are going to turn this into a double profile thread...

Not just the profile needs to be doubled!

Sadly, this is not my coin.image

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage Love it. But the double profiles are still affordable.
Something such as you just posted I have no doubt would cost off the planet money.

I was a bidder on this to 6200.00 when it sold for 13000.00 dollars at the B&M sale of the Russ Logan collection after his death. I have lost track of who has it now. If anyone knows...?

That is one wild Bust half. I have never seen one with such a die rotation between strikes.
