Will PSA grade/authenticate this Benny Friedman autograph?

Since I've become a full-fledged Gold member, I'm thinking of having some things other than cards graded/authenticated, like tickets and autographs.

Will PSA accept the picture below? It measures about 3 3/8" x 5". It appears to be a picture cut from either a newspaper or sports magazine with newsprint-type paper, such as SPORT, probably from the 60's. On the reverse side is a partial picture of Bill Rigney in an old Calif. Angels uniform. I've had this for about 30 years and only recently remembered I had it when I read about him making the HOF. As I understand it, his is a very difficult sig. to find.

If not PSA, is there an alternative?

  • Bow,

PSA/DNA will most certainly authenticate that autographed picture. They might not have a holder to encapsulate it depending on the size, but you will get a COA with sticker and matching sticker on the item. I believe that's how they work it. Check out www.psadna.com to see their fee structure. Everything I have sent them has been card size and encapsulated. Check out my site sometime for examples -

By the way, let me know if you want to sell that Friedman as I have been looking for one for a few months now.

  • I would email them to check before sending it in. I have had six or seven Friedman autographs over the past few years and I checked a couple years ago on getting one graded and they wouldn't do it because they didn't have enough examples to compare it to. That may have changed now that he is in the HOF. Unfortunately, if they do grade it, they will probably charge $50, or more, to grade it.

If PSA doesnt have someone experienced enough on that auto, you can give GAI a call as they may.
  • Thanks for the responses guys, I'll look into this a bit further.

For the record though, I hadn't really given any thought to selling it. I'm just too fond of it. Actually, this little piece of paper is one of the reasons I now collect vintage football cards. When I fist got it, I was strictly a baseball guy and never even heard of Benny Friedman. Well, years later, I rediscovered it amongst my things and it sparked an interest to find out a little about him. So, I started collecting books about football, mostly histories and biographies from the good ol' days. Reading about Benny and other old players got me interested in vintage cards and so on. I owe a lot to this little Benny Friedman picture.

As I understand it, Benny Friedman didn't do much signing in his later years, because he was a bit ticked off that the HOF hadn't recognized him yet. From what I've read he was really pretty self-absorbed and liked to talk about himself, which may be why it took so long for him to get in.

  • Bowdown,

If you collect books, you have to check out "Sunday's Heroes: NFL Legends Talk About The Times of Their Lives" by Richard Whittingham. Got this book for Christmas and I love it....best football book I have ever owned in terms of photography and stories. Tons of pictures of the old time players and has text on almost every single player in the HOF. Page 11 has an incredible picture of Benny with Shipwreck Kelly. Check it out....I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

That name (Richard Whittingham) sounded familiar so I checked my bookcase. Sure enough, found another similar book by him called "What a Game they Played" (1984). Been a while since I read it, but I vaguely remember some interesting stories in it as well about Benny Friedman and Shipwreck kelly (great name). I'll have to check out "Sunday's Heroes" as well.
