<< <i>And the cost of living in Orange County is huge. It would take 2.5x the income I have here to live the same way there. >>

...which is why everyone lives here in Riverside county! You only have to make 2X a normal income. image

They gave up reporting traffic back-ups on the 91 freeway years ago....

I'd apply for the job....except my photography skills rank somewhere between my knowledge of particle physics, and my basketball slam dunk abilities.

  • Wait until you find out how much a house costs in Newport Beach before you think about moving. I wonder if the graders can even afford to live there.

Just because they have a P.O. Box in NB, doesn't mean that's where they do the grading. image

Average price per square foot in Newport Beach -- I'd estimate $400-$500. So for an average house there I would guess between $750,000 to $1 mil, but of course you could go much higher. With 20% down -- mortgage of about $5000-$6000 month, property taxes of $700-$1000 month. Also, everything is also more expensive. Average dinner out for 4 -- nice place, not fancy $150 with tip. Gas would be another $50 a week. Kids don't go to public school in SoCal so thats another $1500-$2000 a month per kid. So I'd imagine that to live a comfortable SoCal lifestyle -- you would need a minimum of $175,000 a year, depending.

  • Stman -- private school. Prop 13 limited property taxes in California so people could buy huge expensive homes without paying huge property tax bills so most schools are unfunded and not very good, though there are exceptions. Most kids in the larger cities go to private schools since telling someone your kid goes to public school is almost like saying you drive a Yugo.

I don't get it either -- I'm not from California, but the school your kid goes to is a status symbol for the parents. BTW -- I don't have kids yet.

And you should know this you're from California, but then again northern California is worlds apart from the land of fruits and nuts down here in SoCal.

Well, let's just put it this way. I know southern California very well. Graduated from "Public School"
and went to College as well. My Sister currently lives in West Hills a decent area, her husband is in the movie business
and oh my gawd, their kid goes to public school.

I do understand what you're saying but some folks rest on different perches I guess.

I'll take the job and improve on my photography if PCGS can set up shop either near the hi-rise public housing being demolished along Chicago's Dan Ryan expressway or somewhere in Minnesota or Ghana. I agree with K6AZ that my photographic skills are not worth the So. Cal. "standard of living".

I wouldn't call West Hills a "decent" area. Its far from that, its down right bucolic and beautiful. I almost moved there! And they do have a great school system.

Don't misinterpret my post, most of it was in jest to give those not living here a idea of what SoCal is like for many people -- not all. It was an extreme generalization.

Yesterday I had lunch with a distant relative that actually said she "out grew her 3500 square foot house on 1 acre in Malibu" and really need to buy her new "house" -- 7000 square feet on 2 acres over looking the Pacific. BTW -- only her and her husband live in the new house. Not sure why a $3 million dollar house wasn't enough for a semi-retired couple, but this is SoCal.

  • What the heck, I'll throw my hat into this. I'll keep my options open if things don't work out here.
