The Museum is incredible. I hear he has quite a few vintage sets that are not yet registered. Definitely one of the most impressive collections out there.

Well my reign at #1 was short lived!

I beleive he purchased most of the set from Mint State making it mostly Art Millers old set.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • yes, you're right - I just looked at Mint State and significantly reduced from last week. Probably got a deal
    but still couple grand worth.

  • It's a shame those with deep pockets can't stick with the top sets and leave the less expensive ones to the average collectors. I for one will be interested in seeing if a "museum" will eventually come about.

    I feel for you J.

I've been behind him in the #2 slot ( 1985 Topps Football ) for over a year now. I have spend a lot of time and money to build my set, so I can only imagine what he's spent.

He's bid high (and wins) on EBAY and also purchases cards from many of my sources across the country. Because of what he's willing to pay, he'll always get 1st shot on most cards we both need. In fact, he raised his set GPA from 8.88 to 9.14 in a relatively short period. Although it's a modern set, it's still a very difficult because of the black borders.

The little guys, such as MetalMike20 (#3 slot ) and myself, are going to try and take him down though! That makes it much more fun when you're the underdog?! I can't say that he doesn't appreciate the set as much as we do, but, if I had that kind of money I don't how I'd spend it. Buying graded vintage-football sets is currently a good deal as football is still undervalued - also saving the time it would take to assemble one.

MintState wanted 5-10X+ SMR for the 68's. MOSH has deeeeep pockets. I can only imagine what he spent.

Of course look for the venerable Art Miller to either disappear all-together with his co-sign bounty or attack
a set with vengance. I laughed when I saw the prices they wanted, now....a nervous mumble

What's your guess on what the set sold for? Or, a total on the cards to finish his set?
  • You'd be hard pressed to find a collector of modern football that hasn't used a few expletives about MOSH. I know I have. I have to thank him (them) for one thing though... It made me realize how foolish a number on the registry was. Sure we would all love to be #1, but it isn't worth mortgaging the house and others. I try to improve my sets all the time. I consider myself a collector or bottom-feeder though. I have accumulated a nice collection for pennies on the MOSH dollar. Not only do i have a nice collection, but also an investment that I could make money on if I so chose. What is the difference between an 8 or a 9 common whoever, just the number on the registry. Sure you may get a few more $$ for it when you sell it, but are you going to get $12-15 a common? I see people spending all kinds of money, I'll wait and spend something reasonable. There are still a lot of good sellers out there on ebay with nice raw stuff.
  • That's kind of my sentiments as well. Having the #1 set is not that important to me, which is why I probably won't bother registering anything, with the exception of the '59 Bell Brand Rams. And even then I won't really care if I have the #1 set or not. I'm just happy to have sets that I like and that I think are nice looking, and are presentable to people I like to share my collection with.

On the MOSH sets, has anyone ever thought of trying to collaborate with others on sets? How about a team effort? Is this possible? It could be 2 or 3 people with the same set in mind pooling their resources (cards) so that the best cards from each persons set are registered under 1 name. Would this be cheating? Yes, I'm sure they would all need to be people that each would trust, but think of the possibilities.image

I'm not quite sure why all the hostility towards MOSH.

Everyone has different levels of spendable cash....just because MOSH has the ability/funds to buy cards in bigger volumes/higher dollars, does he really earn this level of contempt?

For example, should I be mad that someone can build the 1971 set I am working on in 8+, when I can only afford 7? Like another posted noted, it's simply numbers. Yes it would be nice to be #1, but in all actuality, isn't this about the collecting and joy of working on a set you love, rather than an arbitrary ranking system?

I don't know...I've seen posts of this vein before and always been baffled.

Isn't MOSH a group of collectors and buyers, with a central leader, banding together to take on the registry?

  • Not to change the topic from 1 of everyones all time favorite guys to talk about the famous MOSH.
All i can say about him or them whoever they may be as love them or hate them they have 1 of the nicest if not the best collection of football cards out there.

What i would like to mention is the seller of the above mentioned 68,s Rick Snyder or MINT STATE.
I have been dealing with Rick for years now , and either way if your looking to buy or sell i have found no better option for high grade football then Rick.
It just outstands me that Rick time after time comes up with the top sets for sale either as a whole or broken up, and when it comes to that never seen low pop www.mintstateinc.com as always the 1st place i check.

As far as selling your collection or just a few cards NO ONE will get you a better return.
    TRUST ME I KNOW

I would just like my fellow collectors to benifit as i have from the knowledge of cards and resources Rick brings to the table as either a place to find the next to impossible item, or a place to either consign cards to or outright sell to. I can tell you i have done all 3 and you will not find a major dealer who pays more or will work on your behalf on any size consignment or turn every stone to find that missing puzzle piece your looking for then mint state.
Guys many of you know me well and many more have dealt with me as both a seller and a buyer and all i can say as do yourself a favor before you sell check with mint state it cant hurt.
I AM GLAD I DID AS MANY OF YOU ARE AWARE RICK WAS THE SELLER OF THREE #1 SETS IN THE LAST MONTH.
MY 66,67,68 topps football sets .
    MUCHO THANKS TO MINT STATE.

    THANKS RICK

On the MOSH issue I agree with Axtell 100%. Wouldn't we all love to have the resources to put together such a great collection. I know I would. I envy the guy or the group but I feel no ill will toward him or them. As a matter of fact more power to MOSH and I hope the museum becomes a reality for I for one would love to view that collection.

  • I recently tried to work a trade with him (not her). Seemed nice enough - tough negotiator. No problem with his efforts - I'd do it if I could.

As for the importance of rankings, I agree that they are meaningless. That is, until MOSH finds a 1972 Comspec Maravich.

Shhhhh! Be vewy vewy quiet. Heh (heh heh heh).
