SGC grading

How does SGC stack up vs. PSA when grading off center cards? Is one stricter than the other if you want your card graded with no qualifiers?

  • check SGC's site at www.sgccard.com and they will explain the centering percentages per grade.

    PSA is stricter on centering.
Off-centered cards tend to get higher grades from SGC than they would from PSA.

In the past, from my experience, PSA weighed centering into the equation more than SGC, and SGC seemed stricter on corners. If I bought an SGC card that was decently centered, cracked it, and submitted it to PSA it would stay either the same or more often bump up in grade. If the centering was bad for the grade it would usually stay the same, or occasionally go down a grade or get a qualifier
However, from examples I've seen in the last year that is no longer the case as they seem to take the centering into account more.
All of this is based on about 40-50 examples, maybe a bit more, so take the low sample into account. Also, virtually all the cards are 5-7 range.

The Rockne SGC 8 card was obviously graded some time ago,
but I believe the Namath and Lincoln cards were graded fairly recently.

Don't think PSA would have given unqualifed grades as high as SGC did for any of these cards :

I think it's great if SGC has now upgraded their centering standards, but what about the cards already slabbed ... image

  • In my experience with SGC, centering becomes an issue in the 7-8 grades. An SGC 96 will cross to PSA 9 most of the time. An SGC 92 with weak centering will downgrade to PSA 8. An SGC 92 with slight off- centering but otherwise strong corners, will sometimes upgrade to PSA 9. Bottom line, before buying any SGC 80- SGC 92 cards, see a scan to check the centering. an eye appeal.
