This auction scares me

Me, I would approach with caution. Something doesn't look right about this coin. To me it looks polished.

I think it may just be a result of the image.

Could be ajaan but if this is in fact a proof 1d this guy has got something. We are talking a truly rare coin as Irish free state proofs are extremely difficult to come by. IF any are around they are in the hands of private collectors. Oh well, who knowsimage

It's his desrciption spinaker that makes me wonder. He talks about where and how he found it quote: " AT THAT POINT IT WAS IN OLD KEEPSAKE BOOK, GLUED IN PLASTIC MOUNT." and that it looks to have been cleaned but yet not polished or whizzed.

I didn't see one but he will pay for the shipping insurance. I guess one would have to email and ask if he has a return policy.

I sent him a message asking.

    Hmm.

My gut instinct is telling me to beware on that one.

    It's intriguing, though.

Maybe I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole, but if it were cheap enough, I might touch it with a twenty-foot pole.

    I wouldn't expect much, though.

I don't see any reason to think that coin is a proof, I'd stay away if I were an Irish collector.

Micheal, if you don't bid I might. But I wonder what the reserve is.

For a proof, it doesn't appear to have mirrors to any degree and the black fields appear to be an artifact of the poor lighting. With the heavy dings that you can see, I'd say it's an impaired proof at best. I feel pretty sure it's been acid-dipped at one point. At the very least, I'd ask for better pics.

That's a French coin, as in "le rub ala Rouge"!!!

The rev. shows it to be heavily burnished. It's worth less than a cup o' Guiness soup. image

I am not bidding for it. Something doesn't feel right.
  • I agree it looks intriguing and he does state it was cleaned at some time. You can see the effects of the cleaning around the edges of the obverse and reverse. Personally I'd stay away from it.

Harshly. Look at the date and the other areas that the polisher couldn't reach. And I don't even want to imagine how the glue was removed. image
