1849 Half Dollar - Opinions please

PushkinPushkin Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭

I bought this coin in Baltimore because it has pleasing eye appeal and I know the dealer well. The dealer had just purchased a number of heavily toned halves that were in a very old album. I don't know anything about Seated Liberty halves. Just guessing that the coin is a strong AU-58 slider that might go MS-63 in market grade?

The coin looks pretty much like the photographs, except that the toning looks better and crisper to the naked eye. Any opinions? Thanks.

Boy, I don't see anything that screams "AU".....(tough to tell from a picture).

If MS is assumed, I'd say better than 63 too.......64 or 65?

If the color is natural, that is one sweet 49 Half? Cant grade from photo, but looks MS IMO as well.

I'm just making a wild guess on grade. The fields are very clear with just few hits under magnification. I can't see any hairlines. The devices are remarkably clean, but I know nothing about this series. Will the God of Plastic like the color, who knows? I really trust this dealer and I have no reason to believe the coin isn't right out of a very old album. The obverse green is especially pleasing in good light.

What was the dealer's opinion on the coin? (Or, what did the price indicate the dealer thought). image

  • I don't see any rubs. The Eagle's beak looks full, as to the wings and wing tips. Liberty's breast and knee often show signs of rubs, I can't really tell from those photos but they look fine. Guessing from those photos I'm going MS 65.
