The Wonderful World of Numismatics

Hello,
I am new to the forums and hope that I am on the right thread. I apologize if I am not. I have a sort of weird question. My question is this. When does one become an coin collector? Let me explain. My father was in the USAF and as a young man I collected different coins and paper currency at every base he was stationed at. This included Germany, Japan, Alabama and Texas. I later joined the Army (2-87 Infantry 10th Mountain Division NY) and had the "oppurtunity" to visit many far away and exotic places. Every where I went I collected any coinage I could get my hands on. I guess I did this becasue I liked the way the different coins looked like. I had no idea of their silver content or worth as rare coins. In May 2003 a friend turned me on to "buying" silver coins on EBay and Teletrade. I have been hooked since. I am completely enthralled with the numismatic world and have read several dozens books on the subject. It is the greatest hobby in the world. I also collect comic books and stamps. Was I a "coin collector" when I started collecting as a boy? or when I started collecting 2 years ago via EBay and Teletrade? I know it seems like a silly question, but I am new to these forums. Thank you for any replies.
P.S. I guess I like to think I have been collecting coins since a little boy instead of just two years ago. Lastly, is the forum that I can submit some pictures of coins I purchased and ask you guys for your opinion? Thanks again.

You have been collecting since you were a boy so you were a coin collector as a boy. Now you are getting more serious. Keep studying and learning about coins and somebody may just call you a numismatist!
Welcome from me, too. I'm just getting into this as well, and finding stashes of coins I've saved for one reason or another since I was a kid. (Except those Morgans I hocked for drinking money when I was 16--OMG!)
The Baltimore coin show inspired me in a couple of different ways--one was to start doing country type sets. I know there is another forum for this (I'm on my way), but thought it was worth mentioning. I was a military brat too, and continued to travel long after leaving home. (It's hard to quit the peripatetic lifestyle.) Since I have a few stamps and currency, too, I'm doing an album with combined coinage, stamp, and currency pages from each country, maybe with a photo or train ticket added in. (Most people would call this a scrapbook, I guess! Actually, the inspiration was that all that pretty money is tucked away in jars, etc., and would be so much nicer and more accessible if organized in album pages.) I started last night after I got home, and by 3am, I was about half finished. I have no expectation of value in such a thing, (except the kind that's not measured by money), but it was sure fun.
My other inspiration was treasure coins--but that was quickly quelled by the price tags on those things!

Sounds like you've been a collector for a long time.
Perhaps someone who just amasses a few coins and never goes any further could
be said to not be a collector, but anyone who studies or collects coins can date his
involvement from his very first one.
Edited to add: Yep, your a collector for sure. Now lets see some pics.
