The mint set that included this rare coin, was this set available for purchase from the mint? If so, what was the original price?

Yes, it was issued and sold by the USMint just as the mint has issued and sold all Eagle bullion proof sets. Issue price was $995. Not a bad return.

It was a funny deal.
The mint said it was a thank you to those that collected the gold sets.
Lots of folks got really mad at the mint over it.
SAE collectors had to fork out $995 to have it in their sets.
Coin World was full of complaints for weeks.
