Question for the best modern coin grader on this forum with experience submitting to PCGS

Coin FinderCoin Finder Posts: 7,163 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have not a clue how to grade the states quarters. Particularly the Wisconsin D mint leaf variety. Can anyone tell me the basic difference between a MS 63, 64, 65 and 66 in this very narrow states quarters group?

Thanks

  • The MS 66's look nicer than the 63's, 64's, and 65's.

It's like grading any modern. I'm not a pro but here is something:

MS64 - A fair amount of marks and broken up luster especially on the high points of the coin
MS65 - Less marks more luster
MS66 - Only a small amount of small nicks (maybe 4 to 5 including reverse and obverse) - The luster appears to be almost a double cartwheel (the luster looks almost like an X). Coin should look fairly clean
MS67 - max probably 2 nicks and they have to be small and not on the main design. THe luster looks like a double cartwheel (an X) . Clean Look
MS68 - 1 teeny tiny nick at most and solid double cartwheel of luster. Blast luster!
MS69 - Ha. Good luck. Unless it's an ASE or a lincoln these are hard to impossible to find. I imagine almost perfect in every way.
MS70 - You can't see it. You would go blind!

    Good answer, F117ASR. Thanks.

thebigeng, for what it's worth, my experience the past 8 weeks has been PCGS has really tightened up on moderns (post '64).
I've had 4 submissions come back with 1964 to current coins and compared to similar submissions last year, these recent ones got clobbered.

In a vaccuum, I can't tell if a SQ is a 64, 65, or 66. But I can tell what looks better than others. Take a roll or two, and order them by eye appeal. The ones at the high end will most likely be your 65s and 66s.
