You know that I pride myself on wanting to learn all I can learn and to share all I can share. Knowledge being shared by you and MS68 will be awesome.
Best of all, it is FREE for the collectors here.
I remember having my heart "broken" in 1978 when I could not find a single gem 1926-S red cent after 10 years of looking as a teenager. I really thought the national dealers including the biggest of them were hiding them from me. You should have seen the tears in my eyes when after looking for 10 hours straight I thought I was going to have to have a non complete lincoln cent set!! Even then the lincoln cent series remains tied as one of my first three "loves" along with the washington quarters and mercury dimes. But I have been too quiet for too long in this series.
I learned very early on what a "stopper" really was! That was the only time in my life a single coin ever caused me to literally break down.
The combined knowledge and experience of you three will make this a very interesting thread,to say the least.I am quite sure this will be very informative. It can only help with the sale of this fine collection. My hat is off to all of you.

TTT- Just because I am so curious to see where this thread goes.

Who wrote up the auction description in the catalog for the coins. Did Heritage do all of the coins descriptions or was it done by committee?

Do you happen to know if Stewart is interested in any of Tom's coins? If so, I would go to the CS show just to watch!! I'd like to throw in a starting bid just to be able to say that Stewart (or maybe Jerry?) outbid me.
This does sound like so much fun...and an awesome Lincoln wheat set to boot!

Lincoln Wheats (1909 - 1958) Basic Set - Always Interested in Upgrading!
I see some like his 21-P in 68RD, the 16-D in 66RD, and the 15-S in 66RD and am just dumbfounded! Perhaps Stewart and Jerry have the same grades in these but gosh! I can only dream about these and maybe I'll see them someday if they're displayed at a show.
My 32-D in 66RD is by far my favorite early Lincoln, but that's a pop 153/4. These pop 5/0, etc. that Stewart, Tom, Jerry, et. al., have are mind boggling!!
I can't wait for the auction at Central States - I'm sure there will be heavy bidding and I hope that Tom gets the prices he's hoping for.

Doug,
Good point. I would send the coins to Shylock for imaging. Both Gerry and Stewart have had coins imaged by him. I think he is an expert when it comes to copper. Great images will do much more to bring higher prices than say... well, we'll just leave it at that.

Doug: The photographing is an issue between Heritage and Tom, but, I will pass along your comment, which makes sense.

Have you seen the Los Altos Collection being offered by Bowers and Merena in their ANA Auction? It's actually a finer collection for the period 1934-1958. 1934 for example, the Los Altos has in 68-RD, the 1939-D in 68-RD etc. The auction is posted on their website
I spent some more time comparing the Los Altos collection being offered by Bowers and Merena in April with the Mershon collection. Bowers are touting the Los Altos as the finest PCGS-certified collection of 1934-1958 Lincoln Cents ever offered at auction. There are six finer coins in the Los Altos Collection, details below:
1934 MS-68 RD (PCGS). Ex. Benson.
1935 MS-68 RD (PCGS).
1939-D MS-68 RD (PCGS).
1949 MS-67 RD (PCGS).
1953 MS-67 RD (PCGS).
1954 MS-67 RD (PCGS).
Quote from Bowers and Merena Press Release
"Specialists in the Lincoln Cent series, especially those assembling PCGS Registry Sets, will delight in Bowers and Merena's offering of the Los Altos Collection," continued Ambio. "This important collection is the finest PCGS-certified set of 1934-1958 Lincoln Cents ever offered at auction, and it includes numerous top-of-the-pop examples."

Easily. Prices to get these shouldn't be too bad, (I'm usually wrong!) because there are a bunch of 67's in those years - and if not - a TON graded just below. Furthermore, certainly more to come as more Lincolns are graded.
Jonesy,
$800,000 will be close, but my guess is that the Mershon Lincolns could bring north of that number. Obviously, it will depend on a number of factors, including parties interested, quality (for the grade) of the coins, etc. It'll be interesting to watch.

I don't need all of them.
There are times when even type coins are overhyped and too pricey! But agreed that right now type coins are reasonably priced. But they usually are 75% of the time.
<< <i>As a consolation prize, anyone not successful at acquiring Tom's MS66RD 1909-VDB DDO can still get one in MS65RD or MS64RD or MS64RB, or MS64BN, or MS63RB, or MS62BN from us >>
