HM Customs

Is it my imagination or are more packages getting held up by HM Customs (UK)? I have had a lot of packages take seemingly forever to get there lately.

  • Packages are taking longer clearing customs and more are being opened and checked. If the sender is truthful on the customs form then there should be no problem, problems can occur if a false value is entered.
Packages to the Isle of Man get checked twice once on entering the UK and then by Manx Customs!

I just had a UK buyer get raked by HMC for over £5 for a measly $71 expenditure. The customs form was filled out properly and there was an enclosed receipt to back it up. The buyer is po'ed. I might get neg'ed for the actions of his country's customs.

An all too common occurance I would think. I've had Canadian customers complain about the fees they've had to pay on packages. I had one guy, who I did a lot of business with, have a package returned to me because Canadian customs, or whoever, wanted him to pay $400 on a $900 package. I didn't blame him one bit.

  • It took two full weeks for a buyer in South Africa to receive a Global Priority envelope from me. I was really worried.

I have had one or two going to the UK that I was sure were lost.

  • <<It took two full weeks for a buyer in South Africa to receive a Global Priority envelope from me. I was really worried. >> Terry , my opinion it wasn't any connection to the Customs in your case. I got up today 6 CPM letters with coins: 3 small and 3 large. 4 of them took 5-6 days to arrive, and 2 of them took 18 (!) days to arrive. None of them even have been checked at all by Customs. Just the matter of luck, how much time it will take.

About the UK mail: 16/2/05 I bought two silver coins from UK seller at eBay, he sent them at the same day - NO COINS!!! And I really don't know what to think, as up today from about 100 letters with coins noone was lost. BTW, he told me that he mentioned the ~ value of coins in declaration (10 pounds) and I paid 2.5 pounds for uninsured mail (his offered way of shipping) will look if I'll ever get the coins image

May be recently were made some changes (bad changes, I mean) in their rules in UK, as all previous coin's mail from England was without any problems, as well as plenty of mine coin's mail TO England.

Here's an odd development: my upset buyer just went NARU this morning. No neg was left, so I am relieved for that.

  • Unless the law was changed as I understand it numismatic interest was suppose to be exempt from the usual UK custom duty.
  • <<my upset buyer just went NARU this morning. >> could you let me know, please what is "NARU" ? imageimageimage
