Top Ten Counterfeit Cards

Which cards do you think have the most counterfeit / fakes out there? I would guess that the 52 Topps Mantle and the Fleer Jordan Rookie card must be up there.

The Mantle is over 50 years old now, but I would be willing to bet that there are some modern cards out there, that for the percentage
they have been in the market, have just as many fakes...the 2001 SPA Vick Auto patch comes to mind. UD said there are no multi-color
patches out here but I have seen many, and remember the card is numbered to only 250

Jordan would have to be top on the list. I would add McGwire to that too

No kidding. At any given time there are usually five or six of the Favre Star Pics autographs listed. That's an awful lot considering the autograph set was only supposed to have 100 signed by each player. Either there is a huge amount of activity on the same 100 Favre autographs, or there are a lot of fakes out there. As someone collecting the Nebraska players from the set, and rarely seeing them, I subscribe to the latter version. The 1991 Star Pics sets only had a handful of cards that have a lot of demand (Favre, Derrick Thomas, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, and Troy Aikman) the rest of the draft class didn't really turn out. Either the stickers are being faked (which probably wouldn't be too difficult) or they're being taken off the autographs of guys that didn't turn out and used to authenticate fakes. There were a lot of the regular cards printed, which would make it easy to practice until one looked close, and then put the sticker on the fake.

As mentioned - the Rose rookie. They are the best counterfeit cards I have ever seen. Never buy one raw from ANYBODY.

88-89 OPC Brett Hull rookie was heavily counterfeited back in the early 90s.

joestalin - the Michael Vicks would be considered altered cards, not counterfeit cards.

If I had to guess the top 10 counterfeited cards, I would go with

    '86-'87 Fleer Jordan
    '52 Topps Mantle
    T-206 Honus Wagner
    '63 Rose rookie
    T-206 Plank
    T-206 Magie error
    '67 Seaver rookie
    '67 Carew rookie
    '66-'67 Topps Orr
'33 Goudey Ruth (all 4 cards)

The sticker removal and replacement on regular base card is the main way. Ruin a $2 auto card and make $100+. It's all a freaking joke with all the new rare ones they are now making. Signing on the front, signing in different color inks, different stickers, etc.

Proline also has been rumored to have had unsigned authenticated cards backdoored

That's what I figured. The rampant forgeries even make it hard to trust the PSA/DNA certified ones that are out there. There's one seller that has been selling a lot of the Derrick Thomas, Favre, and Barry Sanders autographs (unslabbed) and wouldn't you know it, they're private auctions. A big warning flag there. Anyway, the sticker removal that goes on doesn't make me happy, because those lesser known autographs (of Huskers) are the ones I want.

IMO, there is a difference between counterfeited cards and sellers who try to pass off a reprint as the real deal. A true counterfeit will try to reproduce the card with no signifying idicia that it is not the original. A reprint sometimes indicates somewhere on the card it is a reprint, but the unscrupulous seller will "wear" the card just so that the indication is gone. A lot of vintage cards have been reprinted, like the Goudeys, the National Chicles, the Delongs, Cracker Jacks. They are fine if you just want a representation of the card, not the real deal, but the problem comes when these cards are "found" in a dead grandpa's attic and are passed off as the real deal.
