A little help on world notes....?

I posted a thread over in the currency forum, however they kind of dismissed me I don't know if it is because I wanted help on a Japanese note and they are familiar with only American. A friend/co-worker of mine asked me to look over his coins that he had just lying around in a Crown Royal tin, he had several interesting coins, and a few interesting notes/bills as well. They say on the front THE JAPANESE GOVERMENT and he has both a 5 and 10 PESOS bills. They look similar in size and the front of the bills borders look similar to American silver certificates on the backs the 5 pesos note is red and just says pesos in the middle, on the ten pesos bill it says ten pesos and is brown.

The other bill says phillippines one peso payable to the bearer on demand in silver pesos or in legal tender currency of the united states of equivalent value. victory series 66 by authority of the phillipine legislature approved by the president of the united states june 13, 1922. It is signed by the president and the auditor general. It says it is a treasury certificate. On the back it is orange and has a black VICTORY across it.

Sorry about the wandering description in a COIN forum none the less but I would really appreciate a little help with some background on these.

Thankyou so much-

These were used when Japan occupied the area. The "victory" notes were issued to celebrate the Phillipines claiming their independence back. These notes are also referred as JIMs, Japanese Invasion Money.

I do not believe the Japanese invasion currency has much value. If the one peso note is crisp and unc., it may bring $10-15.00, perhaps more if it is really nice. The Philippines currency from the 1903-1946 period is really interesting and a great area to collect. Keep in mind, that the NOTES that circulated during that time were backed by the US Government.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I actually started the Currency forum and early on it was a well-balanced mix of world and US notes, but the US notes caught on more and world note posts just became increasingly rare. There's a lot more knowledge about world notes here than there. In fact, I collect Philippine Guerrilla currency.

Coinkat is right that most JIM is inexpensive and it is mostly collected in Unc. for a few dollars apiece. That doesn't mean they're all easy to find, though. The specimen issues are the only ones that are truly rare and these will be overprinted "Mi-Hon" in red on the back.

The 10 Pesos sounds like the issue from 1942 and there are two paper varieties, buff and white. Krause's catalog gives the Pick numbers for these as P108a and b, respectively, and lists them at $1.25 and $0.75 in Unc. The 5 Pesos I'm not sure about. The 1942 issue has an orange (not red) back, but says "Five Pesos" while the 1943 issue has only "Pesos" on the back, but is brown on gray underprint. Is there some sort of monument on the front or a plantation scene?

Your Victory Peso is P94 and was issued in 1944; it lists at $6 in Unc.

  • Thanks Askari,

The ten pesos note has a picture of an animal (possibly cow) standing in some trees. The 5 pesos note has the monument. These are on opposite sides of each other. Thanks for the interesting tid bits all.

That 5 Pesos is then P110a, from the 1943 series, and worth $2 in Unc.

Oh, and welcome to the Forum, too!! image

There is an article in the March 21 edition of Coin World about Japanese Invasion notes.
