Cause for the apparent PCGS improved turnaround times?

Several of you have indicated that PCGS has shown a marked improvement in the turnaround times.

What do you attribute this to?

  • Competition getting a larger share of the market, AND,the possible lack of new material.

I also think times will improve further as Collectors' Club gold memberships expire and more average collectors don't want to renew at the $199 Platinum level.

I would not be the least bit surprised if sometime between now and early summer PCGS runs another Collectors' Club special like the one they did with B&M a couple of years back. The new fee and membership structure might have given them a slight boost initially, but what good is a 10% fee increase if it supresses submissions by 25%? And what good is a 100% increase in membership fees if it prevents 75% of CC members from renewing?

  • I think that my last submission to PCGS's main competitor went 17 days longer than their stated time, has some direct bearing on PCGS times decreasing. JMHO.image

  • I have a question.....if because of the increase in PCGS fees and decrease in submissions, NGC grabs a larger portion of the market, is it possible that differnce in prices realized could be narrowed?
  • Having a new grader probably helps as well.

i figure they have made a concerted effort to speed up grading on Modern and Economy submissions at the expense of the other service levels to catch up on backlog and improve submitter perception. i don't see it as an across the board turnaround improvement. at least that's what my current status tells me as i wait. i also have my own ideas about how they determine what to grade and in what order and it's a bit ridiculous.

as suggested long ago, why not just assign a number to a submission when it's received and grade the coins in that order??? even if grouped by submission service level, it would still be more equitable than what's currently done.
