    No, not yet. image

It is the second finest known 50-C, the finest an MS-64 with a "weak C". In my mind, the "strong C" should be considered the finest.

Also, it is one of the few coins from the Elaisberg gold collection in which there is a distinctive mark on the coin (possibly mint made on the truncation) in the catalog picture that can be used to positively attribute the coin. Many of the pictures in the catalog are small and lack sufficient detail.

That's a huge jump in grade. It looks more MS than AU to my untrained eye, though. Very nice.

  • I don't understand how a coin could go from AU 55 to MS 63 ! One has wear, the other does'nt !

Seems like a pretty large jump. I've experienced 58 to 62 jumps before, but this is two steps further than that!

First, who graded it AU55? Second, do we think the mention of "Eliasberg" gave it a few bumps in grade?

Very cool coin. It clearly looks uncirculated. The southern mints were not known for the same quality as their northern brother, so they need to be given more leeway.

It was raw AU-55 in the 1982 Eliasberg sale. It is presently in a PCGS-63 holder.

The southern mints were not known for the same quality as their northern brother, so they need to be given more leeway.

I agree, and that is generally the case now.
  • Is it the big O variety??
