GOETZ: The Revenge Sower, 1914

K-136 THE REVENGE SOWER (Racheserin), 1914, Cast AE, 57mm, Wt. 58.40g, UNC.

Personified after the French coins by Roty.

Obverse: Marianne, (France) scatters snake seeds of revenge. Inscription, “Rache saetest du bei Zeitenschone” – You have already sowed revenge before. Below here feet is inscribed “Nach Roty” - After Roty

Reverse: A Gallic cock is tearing up the Geneva Convention Document with its feet and crapping on it. Dum-dum grenades* lie on a manure pile nearby. This was the first time the French had used this type of ammo. Inscription reads, “ Allen Respeckt vor der grande Nation” – All respects for the grand nation – 1914.

*The dum-dum bullet was a jacketed .303 cal. British bullet with the jacket nose left open to expose the lead core in the hope of increasing effectiveness.
