It truly amazes me that someone would spend $6,500 to acquire this complete 2004 mint set in PCGS holders instead simply buying a mint set directly from the US Mint and then sending the coins into PCGS for grading. For about $400 total you would have the same set you have now. Maybe not in the highest grades, but so what. Isn't it all about the COINS? And certainly a fresh US Mint set looks very nice.

Playing the "game" with these modern coins and trying to turn a $6,500 investment into a $1,000 profit has nothing to do with coin collecting and everything to do with greed. And I'm not singling out this seller. It's all the people who want to be #1 in the PCGS registry FOR JUST AS LONG AS THEY CAN MAKE A BUCK ON THEIR EFFORT. Then they sell because they don't want the coins anymore. JMHO. Steveimage

As a note I purchase over 600 - 2004 mint set to carefully select high grade coins.

For about $400 total you would have the same set you have now. Maybe not in the highest grades, but so what. Isn't it all about the COINS? And certainly a fresh US Mint set looks very nice.

My grading fees in 2004-2005 have been in excess of $6,000, trying to make a noteworthy set.

Playing the "game" with these modern coins and trying to turn a $6,500 investment into a $1,000 profit has nothing to do with coin collecting and everything to do with greed.

Greed? What is it about buying at 19.00 x 600 = $11,400.00 plus PCGS grading at say $4700.00 ( win some lose some) = $16,100 . I would not call that greed, I would call that stupidity.

And I'm not singling out this seller. It's all the people who want to be #1 in the PCGS registry FOR JUST AS LONG AS THEY CAN MAKE A BUCK ON THEIR EFFORT. Then they sell because they don't want the coins anymore. JMHO. Steveimage >>

  • Steve, if life in the coin world were that simple, I am sure XXX has collected a bunch of ms66,67 along the way. It cost a lot of money and time to build a good registry set. would you like to buy some 2003D ms65 Sac's? Over $1000 invested in buying rolls of 03d's and then sending them to pcgs and praying every night for 2 months that they come back with one 68, just to end up with a bunch of 65's and 66's. I am not rich and building a set of sac's with my stepson took a lot of time, money and begging and sending coins in, waiting, bidding on Ebay, losing to some 50 cent bids at a $400 level, and watching bids, and finally getting a coin that you can register to move up a notch and seeing the excitement in your kids face as your set moves up! So, maybe the coins don't seem to be worth the money, but doesn't a person deserve to be compensated for 100's of hours of time putting a set together? My guess is Walt spent a good 100 hours to get a set in Number one! Gaining a thousand on this set - he is raking in a big $10 per hour! Pretty cheap for the time, if you ask me. Besides, walt is not someone that takes advantage of people, He is more than happy to give advice to people like me and I am sure others. I think a person that is wlling to provide guidence to others is a true collector!!!

Thanks Bob...........I wish I had only 100 hours in that set and am to ashammed to admit probally closer to 300 hours, and the costs...well, we won't talk about that either. I am glad you mentioned other peoples help, for with out it I nor many would not have suceeded. I find helping people enjoyable as well, I enjoy learning from others. It was thru this help, I have learned about coins.

There are several people I would like to thank and most of them already know who they are, as from there help and me helping them we have build great hobby and personal relationship. Thank again Bob for showing the positive side and redirecting the negitive statement of another.

Good luck on that 2003-D in 68 (I need one too) , as I have drawers of 03-D MS66/67's and All I need is one 68. Make 2 and sell me the other.

Good luck Bob and thanks again. Walt

Good luck, ole boy. Yes it does require a LOT of time, patience and diligence to make top coins. Personally, knowing you as I do, I hope you can sell it here, but if not... you can believe that somewhere out there is that certain someone with the bucks that can afford and wants that set.

All the Fraud and copying of people's entire items, pix and text included, scares a lot of people....just like these 2 clowns, 1 in the Netherlands and the other in Russia that offered me a second chance offer on Craig's PCGS 67 1934 Quarter a few days ago. I knew it was bogus just by the way they addressed me but unbeknownst to them,I KNEW Craig sold it.

    Good Luck!image

    Walt,
I wanted to wait until after the EBAY auction to comment further on my original remarks on this thread. First, Walt, I apologize to you for the way I presented my argument against paying big money for modern high pop coins. I do not know you and it is obvious from other comments in this thread that you are a fine collector. My main point really is that marketing has created these modern coins which have been in many cases subjectively graded at a very high level by PCGS or NGC. That, combined with the competitive nature of the Registries has resulted in, IMHO, collectors way over paying for these coins. While there is no doubt that these coins are very nice, there is also no doubt that there are literly thousands of others JUST AS NICE. They just haven't been slabbed yet. It is this thought, again IMHO, for why a 2004 complete Mint set in high grade is not selling. For that kind of money, a collector can purchase a 1909VDB Lincoln cent Matte Proof coin in PR64RB. There were only 420 of them made by the US Mint and probably only 200 or less exist today. Check the pops on that coin in PCGS and NGC. I fully realize that each of us has his own perspective on the coins and the coin market, and that is what makes this hobby great. Good luck to you. Steveimage

Steve, BTW, the set is relisted, I Droped 700.00 off and if it doesn't sell, I will either hertitage it off or peice it out which should get the same results as my BIN price.

Thanks for you philsophy, I am sure there are some junoir collectors here that have enjoyed your phycho-babble.

Personally, you don't know me, and your cavaleir adittude about what things should costs, and what work is involved to get these coins bothers me.

I welcome you to find, make, locate a 2004-P WI or IA in MS68, Better yet, you are a "Penny" collector......Find a 2004-D Ms69RD Pop 3, I have one , and the 2 other coins I mentioned I have 2 of each that means I own 16.6% of them, along with 3 out of the 4 new jeff's (04) in ms68, theres one....find a Peace Medal P in 68, Another Pop 3. Guess I own 33.3% of those too.

So you see...I am sure their are a zillion of them Peace-P's MS68 out there just waiting to jump into PCGS holders. The point is not how many were produced, But how many of them have graded high enough to be Top Pops. Thanks Steve, for all your wonderous imput. It just sounds like you are mad at modern collectors......

Sorry guys...I hope this didn't sound too nasty.....I just don't know where Steve is coming from or why anymore light was shed on what I thouht was a "Dead Thread" Maybe he just wanted to get his point across.

Sorry you feel the way you do. I guess I'm the odd one who appreciates my coins for the beauty and NOT for just what money they may bring later. The fact that your appreciation of the accomplishment of having the highest graded PCGS 2004 Mint set collection has led you to "sell it off" less than one year later shows me that you have no faith in the long term potential of these coins and that you are more into investing in coins than in collecting them. Remember, this is just MY opinion. Steveimage

Steve..........Who says I don't have a second set? Ever think about that????? Something to ponder.
  • Steve I gotta go with XXX! There isn't any nice way to say this so here goes : SHUT UP! Did it ever occur to you that many of us like collecting moderns as much as or more than you collecting your pennies. I understand you wouldn't pay good money for these coins. But like XXX said, there are only three 2004 D pennies in ms69 The last one on ebay went for $1650. It would probably go for over 2k now. PCGS isn't making many of these coins. I would gladly pay this kind of money if I had it right now. Unfortunately I won't for a couple more years. When I do, these coins will NO DOUBT BE MORE EXPENSIVE. So I hate to be rude but Let us collect what we want and go collect what you want. We won't bother you and you leave our sets alone. Don't tell us how to spend our money and we won't tell you how to spend yours. The bottom line is we are all collectors of this great and fun hobby. Isn't that good enough for you?

Now, sorry to do this in your thread XXX. But I just had to tell him to mind his business!

Thanks Zac....I guess untill you try making some of these 04 coins, then find out you can't ...then try to find them to buy, then you find them unavailable to purchase...you start to get a picture of their rarity even though a zillion coins were minted. And pricing....well thats a whole another issue. Like you said if they were available the cost is very hiigh. I beleive the set I have listed at ebay is a smokin deal at the price it has been lowered to. That bascically is below cost on the coins and they are all there. I am not sure what point Steve is trying to make but he is wearing it out. Take care Zac, and Micheal....Welll you know........You Da Man (of SHQ's) See ya Guys.

PS Micheal...........I'll give you 38.00 for that 99 in MS69...........according to Steve's theory, that is about market for that coin. (PS That coin is probally worth every penny of 10,000-13,000.00 my guess, probally more)

Thanks MAS! I am getting very tired of collectors ripping on us modern collectors. They have to remember that once upon a time their coins were MODERNS. Someone had to collect them back then to save them for today. It must have been a modern collector. Without us, their coins would not be here today. Nobody would have saved them back then when they were moderns.

XXX, I would at least give him $50 for his SHQ, ROFLMAO! JK, I agree that that coin is worth $10k plus easy. I think any of us modern collectors would give out left arm for one of those, hehe!

I enjoy talking to both of you guys and will always stick up for modern collectors. Take care to both of you and happy hunting for those "worthless moderns."

    Zachary
  • Regardless of position on this issue, some of you are being just plain rude and there is no reason for it!

I collect mostly moderns ... and I know that the values for these ultra high grade coins is mostly caused by hype. Yet I still buy into them because I enjoy them. That should be the name of the game. I don't expect to make a profit and I would be very please indeed if when I die my estate manages to break even on these purchases (note I did not say Investments).

Learn to play together. Everyone's blood pressure will be the better for it!

    Just to make my point
