Guidance sought

I just got this email, supposedly from ebay:

"Due to recent activity, including possible unauthorized listings placed on your account, we will require a second confirmation of your identity with us in order to allow us to investigate this matter further.Your account is not suspended, but if in 48 hours after you receive this message your account is not confirmed we reserve the right to suspend your eBay registration. If you received this notice and you are not the authorized account holder, please be aware that it is in violation of eBay policy to represent oneself as another eBay user. Such action may also be in violation of local, national, and/or international law. eBay is committed to assist law enforcement with any inquires related to attempts to misappropriate personal information with the intent to commit fraud or theft. Information will be provided at the request of law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Makes me very neverous. It came from aw-confirm@ebay.com and was referenced as TKO Notice A36. When I clicked on the link, it looked like a regular ebay sign on page, but then asked me for my credit card information, which I don't remember from when I originally set up the account. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is there any chance that it's not legitimate?

Delete it, it's crap. If you have entered information, change your eBay password immediately, and if you gave credit card information, you need to call your credit card company and cancel the credit card.

I delete all e-mails from eBay or PayPal, they are all fraudulent as far as I am concerned. You can also forward them to spoof@ebay.com

It's almost assuredly a phishing scam. Change your e-mail display settings so that you get the full routing information and then forward the message to spoof@ebay.com. I don't know if eBay is aggressive about stopping those that send out these e-mails, but I figure it can't hurt to let them know about it.

Oh yeah, this sounds like it's the first time you've seen one of these bogus e-mails. Chances are, at some point you'll receive similar e-mails that appear to be from PayPal. Fraudulent as well.

Yeah, you guys are right as usual. Ebay said it's a fake. Like an idiot I did enter my password, but now I've changed it. I'll report it. Really pisses me off, though.

Never follow a link in an email. Instead, navigate on your own to the site in question and login. If there is a problem they will certainly let you know.

As has been said in every thread about emails like this, all you have to do is look at the salutation.

If it doesn't say "Dear (your name)" it is fake. All these scams say "Dear Ebay user" or "Dear Paypal User" or "Dear (your ebay user ID)".

All you have to do is look at the salutation.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

eBay will never ever ever EVER ask you for your password through e-mail or by any means other than when you actually login on ebay.com

As you entered info, change your id's or passwords now just to be safe.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • If you clicked the link you need to also check your computer for any spyware or viruses that may have loaded.

Dead giveaway on these type of emails is at the very beginning. If the address you by the name registered with Ebay most likely it is real, otherwise it is fake. To be sale any email I get from Ebay or appearing to be from Ebay I foward to Spoof@ebay.com they usually reply within 30 minutes verifying if it is real or not.
