Spend them at the grocery store. There is great value in the joyousness felt and splendor displayed by the clerk upon receipt of one.

There are a lot of kids who have never seen one - try given them out to them on Halloween - that'll light their eyes up!

Someone posted that they had given a worn out silver dollar as a tip to a waiter. That sounded like a good idea to me.

I give away beautiful, but common coins to friends and acquaintances as golf ball markers. I prefer half dollars, and my favorite is the Walking Liberty Half, but a Morgan Dollar would do just fine.

Every person I have given the W.L. half to use as a ball marker has returned to tell me how much attention they get from other golfers for using the old silver half. It makes for a great conversation piece and the user is assured to have a unique and historic coin, that no one else will have.

Leave them as tips. I do that some times, but not too often with dollars.

  • Sell them to me. I like to put them in my daughters piggy banks.

I think LTC had a point with the belt buckle idea. Dunno about "shining the snot out of 'em", but I think the belt buckle and/or money clip/jewelry/etc. idea is a wise way to "max the value", as you said.

That is, if they aren't difficult to mount, and if one can find the buckles and such.

I bought a bunch of keychain bezels for silver dollars, just in case such a thing happened to me. In fact, I recently got a whizzed-up 1921 that I'm gonna "shine the snot out of" and put in one o' those bezels. (Somebody already ruined it with the Brillo treatment, so maybe if I polish out some o' the hairlines it'll look a little better.)

Edit to add: I got the keychain bezels from Brooklyn Gallery for less than a buck each.

I once met a guy because of some nasty SBAs and morgans. We were in line together back in 1995 to buy tickets to see Page and Plant at the Boston Garden. Turns out they didn't take credit cards so I spotted him the $13 cash he was short. I bought my tickets and we walked out to his truck where he paid me back in SBAs and morgans- had them in his change bin. He was amazed I knew what they were. We've stayed friends over the years, I get a christmas card annually and he's a stand up comedian. I've seen his act a couple of times, too.
Not sure if you could apply this in any way, but maybe.
