Anyone gotten a card back with the new style holder?

Just got a batch of cards back today. One of them uses a new holder. This one appears to use a penny sleeve or very thin mylar sleeve in place to keep the card from bouncing about. I like the idea, but it looks absolutely horrible and sloppily slabbed. BGS uses this concept as well, but their slabs were made for this and the presentation is much better. The PSA slab looks like it was reverse engineered and retrofitted with for the sleeve. Anyway, the front looks "OK", but the plastic on the back is wrinkled and crunched in like it was just too big for slab. In fact, the wrinkles around the corners are so bad, it's nearly impossible to get a good look at the condition of the corners from the back. Who's bright idea was this? I'll try to post a scan of it later when I have some time.

I've seen some with the sleeve and have to agree. I see what they are trying to do, but I have to say it looks awful. I never really understood what the big deal was with a tiny bit of movement in the holders was, anyways. Not like people are taking their cards off-roading are they, to where that tiny amount of movement is a big deal? I think some people just like to be a voice of dissent.

Is this really a new holder? I thought PSA had been using the sleeves for weird size cards for a long time.
  • What kind of card were you talking about Boggs?

I have 1 card like that, but it was holderd at least 2 years ago. If mine is like what you talking about. Like Koby said though PSA has used a mylar insert type thingy for oddball sized and or if they are out of a certain holder.

I couldn't get a good scan of it. You have to sort of look at it from a slight angle to see how badly the sleeve was apparantly FORCED into the slab. I just hope it doesn't actually DAMAGE the corners over time as there appears to be some stress in those areas.

Yes I have one that looks just like that. appears they are out of a size and utilized that ( or that card is oddball sized and they do not have a holder for it.)

I am almost certain. Could be wrong.
    Good for you.

The sleeve is used when a card is undersized
to keep it from becoming damaged from excess movement.
It can occur with a card from any year.

I hate them and took one to a grader at the PSA booth at a show.
He said that if it has a sleeve, it's there for a reason,
and that the card can't be reholdered without it.

So I just sold the card to someone who wasn't bothered by it.

Sometimes they have mylar sleeves because PSA is temporarily short of the correct slabs. I have some 1950 Callahans with nice snug framing, but a couple others that are in standard holders with a sleeve to keep them from sliding.

The card is definitely not undersized. I suspect they simply just ran out of the regular slabs. I just wish they didn't chose this particular card out of the batch as it really looks terrible.
  • dolan, I'd reholder the others if PSA now makes holders that fit your Callahans if I were you...

Even more reason for me to stick with SGC for my personal collection.. image They custom cut the black insert to fit perfectly around any card to keep movement to a minimum.. Mostly important to me is looks though.. I like to display the cards I keep forever so they're best for me.. Not to take anything away from PSA though.. they do go for more..
