was this rude ?

I just sent Steve of BBC Exchange an e-mail stating that the Baseball Card Kid had a 1979 topps vending box for 15.00$ less than what he was selling for. I told Steve I would much rather buy from him (because of all the business we have done together in the past) and that if he would consider selling me the vending box for the price The BBC Kid was selling his for. Does anyone else think this was rude? or will he be glad to get the business?

TB - my experience has been you can ask someone to kiss your a*s in a way that isn't rude. Depends on how you worded it.

    LOL...

steve is top notch. i noticed he had 81/82 topps bkb wax for sale yesterday. i emailed him about them and qty price. he immediately replied and said someone had just purchased the whole lot. said to expect them to be graded and on ebay soon....i wonder who bought these (4sc or DSL)????

to answer your question, i don't think it hurts to ask and the least he could say is no. if you don't ask, you'll never know.

    Thanks,

I thought he would rather miss the 15 bucks than loose 185 to bbc kid.

hmmmmmmm. Next time just ask for that price. That is if you feel you should not have used the other dealer as leverage. thenif he says no, you counter with that info.

    Steve
    Good for you.

I don't think it matters if he feels it was used as leverage. He was up front and is a repeat customer. Now BBC Exchange doesn't have to ask why he should discount the box. Two reason, repeat customer and competition.

If the box had been 2-3 bucks difference I probably would have bought from BBC Exchange reguardless. But 15 bucks is worth asking about in my opinion. Besises I spent almost a thousand bucks the last couple of months from BBC Exchange. I think Steve or someone from BBC Exchange probably keeps up with BBC Kids prices fairly close anyway or vice versa. So it's not like I pulled a number out of the air..

Isn't wasn't that rude. I assume that most of those big sellers have their price, and that's that. Maybe some will go lower, so it's worth a try.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Not rude at all. Its part of business and I am sure he will agree with that.

  • Barter all you want, who cares? When I talk to Levi @ 707, it goes something like this...

Hey, this one books for 80 and your asking 110, will you take 85? NO

What about this one will you take 75? NO

What about this one for 110? NO

What about all 3 for 260? OK.

    Or something like that...

It doesn't hurt to ask, all part of the business!

Bottom line is, you don't know what they have into it. Many times if THEY got a good deal, they may work with you and split the difference.

  • If it's a few dollars difference, I don't think it's rude.

On the other hand, I recently got some 88/89 Fleer packs for $7.50 (half of what BBCExchange, Murphy or Dave and Adam's sell them for). Asking them to take 50% off retail would be a bit much....

To add another 2 cents (which brings me a penny short of a nickle) it's never rude to ask for a discount.
Rude is when you can't take no for an anwer.

    Edited for rudeness

teneseebanker - there is nothing rude about asking a seller a question about his price versus a competitor. You have the right to ask, and then make your informed buying decision. What is rude is to post a self effacing request on the forum, and then be rude to a board member who is trying to tell you to read between the lines.. Regards and good luck.

Years ago Murphy was selling 78T vending for 225 and I had just picked up a card from him in his auction and I was a regular. I asked him if he would consider matching one of his competitors who is selling his for 150$ and he said sure.
If he had said no, I would have just said, thanx for considering my offer.

As others have said, it doesn't hurt to ask. When I walk up to a table and don't know the seller, I usually just ask if the prices are etched in stone. And see what they say.

Now in my business, if you ask for a discount, the answer will be a very 'friendly no thank you'

    Goudey:

From the scenario you presented below...it appears that you got all 3 cards for $260 instead of the $270 that you offered to buy them at seperately.
