I've Reached 100% Again!!

I just completed my registered 1976-77 Topps basketball set today! It's the second registered set I've completed, the first one being another "Tallboy" card set, the 1969-70 Topps basketball set. As with the 69-70 set, I started about ten months ago with a raw set and no graded cards. I purchased almost all of the cards in the set off of eBay, starting with a few lots. Including the free two grading for getting to 75% in the registry, I submitted around 5% of the cards from the raw set to PSA. Of the cards I submitted, most were of obscure players whose cards for whatever reason seem more difficult to obtain (such as Billy Knight, whose card in PSA 8 went for over $100 on eBay a few months ago!) or from the last three cards in the set. I never was able to get above a PSA 8 on any of the ones I submitted, but for these super oversized, often poorly stored cards, I feel satisfied with that.

Ultimately, I'd like to have the set in all PSA 8 or above. I'm close to that goal, but still have about 10 to 15% I'd like to ugrade from 7s to 8s. Fortunately, my set is free of qualifiers! If anyone has some 8s they want to sell, feel free to send me a PM. I'd love to get some 9s, but they tend to bring more than I'm willing to shell out, usually.

Well, I enjoyed putting together the set, and now only need to finish up the Topps basketball set for 1970-71 to complete the 70s basketball "Tallboy" trifecta! image

PSA awards you the following :

Free Grading. We recognize that not every card in every important collection has been graded by PSA. In order to encourage participation in the PSA Set Registry program when your set reaches 75% complete, you are entitled to the following free grading benefits:

If the set composition is 1-50 cards you are entitled to 1 free grading.
If the set composition is 51-150 cards you are entitled to 2 free gradings.
If the set composition is 151-300 cards you are entitled to 3 free gradings.
If the set composition is 301+ cards you are entitled to 5 free gradings.
Free gradings are for cards within the set that has reached 75% completion. You should request your free gradings with the intent to either add or upgrade your set with the cards that are being graded for free. You cannot submit the same card twice for free grades. All cards must be submitted at one time. If your set has reached 75% complete, please contact setregistry@collectors.com for an authorization code. No free gradings will be permitted without this authorization code, so be sure to write the number down on the top of your submission form. It is your responsibility to pay for postage and insurance.

Check out the Benefits selection under PSA Set Registry page. I've used it a few times. It's a nice gesture from PSA.

I read the benefits as you have listed here. I assume you do not have to be an actual member of PSA??

  • Those benefits blow. I want a better deal when I get to that point. Im 34% but at 40% with SGC, and think 3 free grades is a slap in the face. I'd rather eventually keep them seperate why should I fork anextra ????? for cards already as good as or better than PSA.
Now looking for a 1950 Bowman Baseball Box as pictured below.
